They said 243 would be fine... what about 1:12 twist?! Many rounds down range with variations on 80 ttsx and no luck. Any suggestions for a bullet that might work? Is there something shorter and lighter out there? Many thanks

Most 243s are 1:10, with some barrels now produced faster twist at 1:8 to stabilize copper (longer for a given weight). Are you sure its 1:12?

All I can say is that you need to look for shorter or flat nosed bullets, which may end up being lighter too.

Edinburgh rifles used to load some Peregrine Bushmaster rounds which might do.

Possibly the 75gr Nielsen sonic which is a bit blunter

How good is your barrel? If it’s worn or pitted near the muzzle end, it might not shoot simply because of the bullet shape.
Rifles will continue to shoot well with flat base lead bullets long after boat tails start tumbling.

Peregrine makes a 75gr VLR4 for up to 1/11.5 twist, I’m guessing you will need to look for 70gr or lighter to be sure? Both 82gr Peregrine and 85 Barnes TTSX shoot very well out of mine but it’s a 1/10.

Virtus also makes a 70gr but state recommended Twist Rate: 1:8 – 1:10!

Does not look promising, the Nielsen above might be worth a try, good luck.

Just rebarrel it in an up to date twist rate then you can use whatever bullet you want. A SSG of that age has probably seen it’s best days by now anyway.

Buying a new or used rifle is looking more attractive these days the way rebarreling prices are going at some places.
Ken.
