Which 22" .270?

Not sure the extra length makes a much difference TBH. I have 2 x .270's, the original is a 22" Browning X Bolt and then I purchased a 2nd hand 20" Tikka T3 to use as a dedicated NV set up.
However I have had the same Zeiss glass on both rifles and they both hit the same point on at target at 200m (using the same factory ammo). There may be mor drop off beyond that range but I haven't tested that.

Cheers @slider, useful real life perspective there. Would certainly open up the options 🤔

have you even chrono'd the loads?

Had a 22" X-bolt .270 SS Hunter - came to despise it compared to my other Sako and Tikkas (all of which are 20" I'd add, even my 75 care of Mike Norris). Ended up giving the rifle away to my local friendly RFD and bought a .270 20" T3X Green/Black Cerakote. Trigger change using one of Ed's 2-stage S20 drop-ins and I moved it into a surplus Tikka T3X Wideland Veil .308 stock with Kalix and its my fallow "laser". Out with it last night - confidence is the word I'd use too!

I have a t3x stainless varmint .270 24", love it, has a big predator 12 mod on the end of it aswell and it dosent bother me at all with length or weight, everyone is different!
The heavy barrel and mod plus the different stock has transformed it, a real pussycat to shoot,
Had a relatively lightweight .270 before, with a barrel that was struggling to be 20" (possibly lost an inch with a rethreading) and I just couldn't get on with it, and no hope of me maintaining sight picture when firing, was also quite the flamethrower when light goes down 🤣

Also have a 20" t3x .270 here that i might compare/chrono with the 24" tomorrow if weather gets better.

I'd say go as long as you can find, if not for you it's an easy job to get a couple inches cut off!

i meant ever , bloody auto correct !
No, but give both rifles were tested on the same day using the same box of (bloody expensive) Sako factory rounds i think it a reasonable assumption the the rounds were very close on speed.

I do intend to chrono the Tikka when ever I can grab a pal with the equipment in order to fine tune the ballistic calculator on my Zulus NV optic - although is seems pretty accurate using the published speed.

fair enough , i was just interested in the difference 2'' made to the velocity

Strange in Sweden 23"/57cm are the standard lenght and 51cm the short option.
I’ve started researching copper bullets and 22” seems to be the minimum for .270 / .30-06 to burn the powder in a longer cartridge. 20” appear to be an anomaly associated with the UK market - I too struggling to get a screw cut .270 T3x in 22 or 24”

Most rifles are still made for lead ammo, both on twist and length, largely driven by the US markets and such. The European market is peanuts, esp the U.K. market, virtually negligible.

I’d walk away from any rifle that’s shorter than 22” to start with, ideally 24”. Then you can shorten and thread to your liking. Many factory thread jobs are poor at best, so starting at 20” and possibly having to re thread or cut further in some years when regrowing is just silly. Copper wants and needs speed to deliver terminal performance, ok, a fast burning powder can help achieve faster velocities in slightly shorter barrels, but bear in mind that if you’re not burning up all the powder, you’ll be burning up your rifle and moderator!

Stick with 22-24” min and if you can’t find what you want off the shelf, have a barrel stuck on that is top quality, length you want, profile you want, twist you want, and thread you want.
