Decorating/disguising a gun safe ?

Hi guys

A curious one. We are moving house soon and the missus really doesnt like the look of gun safes.

Im not worried from a security/safety aspect- it wont be visible from windows or in an area where hoise visitors see it. My question is purely cosmetic.

One option is to fit it- and then slide a cheap wardrobe over the front of it- but this looks bulky to me and wouldnt be my first choice.

I know im not going to be able to change a bloody great grey safe into a work of art- but has anyone decorated theirs so it's slightly less of an eyesore ? Screens, faux leather cladding, wall paper etc ?!

Perhaps its just polishing a turd i dont know ?!

You could just box it in with timber then paint to match walls. It would then just look like boxing around pipework or something like that.

Ask the BBC as the TARDIS disappeared just like that.

Thats not a bad idea actually- covering in burnt wood- almost like a sauna or ski lodge- may be slightly easier on the eye ?

Mines inside a wardrobe and has been for years so not a new idea at all. Rawl Bolted to a back wall of course.

Friend has one tucked into a corner in the back hallway beside a load of coathooks with a danger of death electrical riser sticker on it

Took me years to notice it wasn't just the fuse board

Cheap IKEA Billy bookcase with doors on, modified for depth if necessary. Lots of choice then to suit your decor (or wife!) 😁

Mine is currently in a hall cupboard but with similar amounts of jackets on hangers everywhere, and beside the fusebox. It’s a pain in the backside tbh, but the feo at renewal did dryly comment that no one would find it in a hurry, as I was heaving mountains of coats out of the way.

Long term I want to move one of the cabinets into the corner of the dining room and box it in to look like a grandfather clock, and have a clock with just a battery mechanism at the top. This may have to be a cabinet maker, I could make or butcher something but not sure I’d do this idea justice.

Should add I’ve looked at Ikea stuff too. Definitely a straightforward idea. They’ve a tall cupboard under the bathroom section that sizes well too.

They are generally a bit too shallow to cover a rifle safe. But built-in across the whole wall and set forward into the room to create the required depth works. Add a piece of timber on top to fill the gap and modify the back board. Still have use of the upper shelves for other shooting paraphernalia .
