Steel is now to be tariffed into the EU.

We didn’t import coal we mined it but was expensive due to the fact the rest of Europe subsidised there coal industry..
we had the safest best coal in Europe if not the world
The coal industry was put to sword by thatcher
Now a dirty word but it built this country to what it is now or was 🤷‍♂️

I distinctly remember news articles about cheaper coal imports at the time. France springs to mind as the source of the cheap coal, or one of them.
It was cheaper to import than to mine locally, so that's what we did. The unions tried to defend the miners, but strikes caused less coal to be produced so we had to buy more in as we were a coal powered nation at that point.
Importing was easy, cheaper and cut out having to deal with the unions. I think that's what killed the mining industry.

The coal industry was ruined by Labour nationalising it, mismanaging it, closing far more pits than Thatcher and by the idiocy of the unions. In any event, we're much better off without it now. If only we could rid ourselves of the blights of unionised idiocy ruining the health, educational and rail sectors.

Another lame attempt to discredit our supposed withdrawal from the EU. 50% tariffs on what exactly? Has the EU ever been a major export market for UK steel production? I somehow doubt it, especially in recent times.

Don't think that's how tarrifs work. It'd be the UK that would have to pay for example Germany if they want to import BMWs. In reality, the tariff will just be passed onto the consumer meaning car prices will sky rocket.

Imported car prices would rocket. UK built cars would then seem cheap JLR, Nissan, Ford, Honda, Toyota.

Yes, the major export partner - although I don’t know whether that actually adds up to significant value. In any event, our trade problems are not a consequence of having left the EU, they are a consequence of extremely low-grade performance from government and particularly the civil service since then.
I somehow doubt it, especially in recent times.

What? I think some confusion here. If the UK slapped a 50% tariff on cars, then the UK would not pay a penny to Germany. The price of the cars would rocket, their sales would plummet and consequently very much less money would flow to Germany.
Given the current realities, the UK government should very much be taking a robust approach to the EU’s continual abuses and threatening them with a 200% tariff on non-EVs. As it is, we’ll all be driving Chinese cars soon, they’ve the capacity to take up the slack, and they’re cheaper for the UK consumer.

SCOW was finished long before the UK left the EU, along with all other UK steel mills. Just like most UK industries at the alter of its cheaper to buy else wear from other countries that subsidised there industries.

RR = BMW. Bentley = VW. Lotus = Geely a Chinese owner.
So what? A) the cars are built here. B) The fact that BMW, VW and Geely are headquartered abroad simply reflects the fact that the UK has a sufficently infantile attitude to business as to make itself unattractive to business. That’s our choice. It’s hardly surprising given the scale of bolshiness in the UK.

Ironic really, given the claim made from BASC (about which i was always sceptical) that one of the drivers of the anti-lead ammo movement was alignment with the EU to benefit British cartridge manufacturers.
