Fallow rut??

There is a herd of Fallow, that live in the fields outside my wee home.

Walking the dog this morning at 0430, it was dark, misty and with a very slight drizzle.

I could hear the 'belching' of a Fallow Buck from about half a mile away.

I have (I kid you not) taken to carrying a bamboo pole as a 'defence weapon', when out with the dog. We were shadowed by a fox earlier this week, and it was not put off by my aggressive tone, or indeed by my head torch. Bastard thing was hard as nails, and had us on the run!

Anyhoo.

Meanwhile back at the Fallow; the activities of this unseen (but very much heard) Buck, must have put some of the herd out of their domain, as there were more than one pairs of 'eyes' which lit up under my head torch, and which indicated they were the 'wrong side' of the fence.

Spooky thing to listen to.

Good job I had my anti-fox bamboo stick with me for comfort...

Fox's don't tend to intimidate me for long ol' friend.

Managed a big old buck Sat ..he was grunting like mad in one wood. Quick rattle of some old antlers to see what happened and out he came..got to about 60 yards and dropped him. Farmer wants them gone so a bit of a "if its legal shoot it" scenario. Didnt remember to get a pic until Id gralloched him...my god he absolutely bloody stinks...fortunately a butcher friend of mine is going to make burgers and sausages for me so I dont need to deal with him.
Yes the buck that I shot yesterday morning really stunk too.
Just started using copper bullets (Barnes 130grn TTSX .308) good shot placement but he ran back into the woods about 30 yards, and there was no blood trail. Just contemplating getting the old dog out of retirement, he's nearly 14 and with a serious heart murmur when I smelt the buck. I smelt him before I actually spotted him. Car window open on the drive home.

Mine yesterday was only a youngster and he was stinky enough!

The boss (my wife) said it smelt like a public urinal ... i had a quick change of clothes and they went straight in the wash . Off stalking with a friend later this week so I doubt that will be the last stinky encounter.

Im on the copper in the 6.5 Creed (Sako Blades in 120 grn) and so far results (whilst limited to 4) have been ok. The buck I shot on Sat was with the .243 and at the range he was I opted for a high neck shot as I didnt want him to run.

I was in a petrol station last week getting a coffee. I had just shot and gralloched two bucks. I stunk like a billy goat. I had a girl stand right behind me, waiting to use the coffee machine. I started giggling to myself, just waiting for her to get the smell. She all of a sudden stepped well back.

One i shot in W Sussex a week ago was starting to smell but great condition (apart from a leg wound). Ones I saw last night were pretty black on the under carriage so left alone hoping for a pricket. That didn’t arrive. Fairly roaming about now

Like a Ninja dog walker

I was out most of last week, some sika calling but not a peep from the fallow dawn or dusk. However taking the dogs out in the evening there is a major party going on in the woods next door 11.30pm to 1am! Stalkers here seemed to think a. too warm and b. the full moon may have made them more active at night.

My park bucks made a tentative start last night with a bit of random throat clearing, and one of them is going strong this afternoon.
That's a week earlier than usual.
