This was only my second bow hunt and I decided on Hungary to try for wild boar.
Sika98k told me of a place that he had hunted at a village called Magyarnandor only 1 hour from the airport my friend and I booked 3 days hunting for boar, Red Stag, Red hinds and calf, Fallow spikers and does.
We flew from Gatwick with Easyjet and checked in 3 hours before flight as he had his rifle all went well and Easyjet staff were very good however at customs I had a problem as the guy tasked with taking my bow wouldnt take it as he didnt understand the difference between bow and firearm then a chap from Border force arrived and sorted it by just putting a firearm label on the case. Off we went and no drama,s at Budapest.
Beautiful big log cabin with warm and clean rooms very comfy. We had a couple of drinks and a bit to eat then off to bed as we had to be out for 5 a.m.
I was taken to a bow stand/high seat were there was a feed station about 20 yards in front of it and informed that I would be picked up at 8.30 a.m. very quiet.
We then had breakfast and told after dinner/lunch we were told to be ready for 2.30 p.m.
The hunting area was 3600 hectres and more high towers and bow stands than you could shake a stick at I never sat at the same place twice .
So I had 6 outings and had boar around me on 4 occasions and twice had an oppertunity to shoot but I messed up.
I was told that a red torch would be needed mounted on my bow as almost all the action starts after dark and I was given a thermal monocular. There was a Romanian bow hunter also hunting there and he was very experienced and he told me how to go about it . You can hear the pigs coming so you watch with the thermal and when you have them in front you point the bow in the sky, switch on the light and lower the bow while coming to full draw. I had 5 good sized pigs in front of me so followed the advise but as soon as the light fell on them they all scattered it turned out I should have waited longer for them to settle but it was super exciting. twice I had pigs coming to the food but they caught my sent and would not present for a shot and on another occasion I had 3 pigs 20 feet behind me (I was not on a stand but at ground level) but I couldnt manouver to get a shot off but that was agian very exciting.
So I got close but no cigar and I will certianly be going back as this place really is set up for bow hunters . There was 2 other bow hunters there and the Romainian chap was very good and helpful he managed to get 3 animals. All the staff and Bence who runs the job were great. It was great to see so many young chaps involved with the running of the place.
