Propellants for 6.5 CM: N160 or N555

Hi All,

I'm about to start developing a load for a 6.5 CM using bullets at the heavier end of the spectrum, probably 143gr Hornady ELD X. I'm looking at Viht N160 and N555 as potential propellants. I understand that N555 was developed specifically for the 6.5 CM but I've tended to shy away from double base powders in the past because of barrel wear concerns. I'm interested to hear peoples opinions and experiences.

I have had very good luck with N204 which is an extruded powder. With 140gr bullets I am getting 2850's fps according to the Garmin Chrono. I have a Ruger American with a 22" barrel

I've ordered some N555 but thanks for the heads-up. I've just looked at N204 from Norma and it looks like a possible high energy alternative.
Thanks

Not available in the UK (unless a remnant of the sole consignment received in the last 30-odd years)!

I am running 550. Not short of speed. As I am not shooting hinds on top of the Cairngorms anymore a bit of temp variation is not going to be an issue
