Black Hare ??

Seen when I was out tonight stalking. It ran into the worked wheat stubble field about 350 yrds from me, then started feeding. What was so interesting was it was completely Black. Although it was getting dark I took a few photos with my Pulsar C50 on sum light mode. It never ran in like a Rabbit and anyway I have never seen any rabbits there in 30 years but I have shot many black rabbits but miles away. Has anyone else seen black Hares

Seen no other colour hares apart from Scotland of course but a local chap said he saw a white brown hare this summer. I've not seen it though.... yet.

Looks normal colour in pics, maybe just looked black in fading light ?

There are a few to be found in the wilds of Grampian, not albinos though, and quite a bit larger than the hill hare.



Watched one female for 7 years on one of my hunting areas, it was remarkable how small here range was. Very educational.

Hard to show in the photos but it was definitely black, I will try over the next few days to stake out the field and see if I can get a better photo, maybe in better light

I always use a chicken, tie its legs together and lower down from the top on a rope

No, just a local genetic abnormality in brown hare, the two are quite distinctively different

Yeah I know they are different, just wondered if that might have been a reason for the colouration given the locality mentioned.

There was talk of it occurring down here in Ayrshire in the past.
