HMIC firearms licencing survey

I suspect many suggestions/comments from gun owners will be treated with less importance than others. I’ve done the survey and concentrated on the delays in the process in the hope that more speed and efficiency will be beneficial to all. In the hope something positive will come from this. That’s hope rather than expectation, although some forces do seem to have partially addressed the delays.

I have had both a renewal and variation within the two years but you can only tick one box, as usual a survey created by someone who does not understand what they are surveying.

Strange. Both performance boxes have regular text in them, no special characters and no indication of over size. Both have a red box saying invalid format and it will not allow me to advance to the next page. I have saved and will try resuming from a PC.
Still the same from the PC!

WTF :banghead:

If the survey is deemed to be inadequate or the desired outcomes weighted, it would be an idea to have our shooting organisations raise this with the survey originators.

Trying to complete on an iPad and it will not accept the text entries made - invalid format 😡

I got that message for the section which asked for instances of particularly good service that may have been received. I couldn’t understand what was wrong until trial & error showed that 3 lines of text was too much. I ended up severely restricting my response.

The following question regarding poor service allowed far more text to be input (I don’t know if something should be read into that ;)).

A poorly designed questionnaire.

See my screenshot above - only one line in the first box

It’s not number of lines as such, it was the total number of characters that was key.

I ended reducing to a single sentence & then still having to reduce the number of characters by using shorter words.

What a faff for something that should have been sorted out before releasing the survey.

My approach with these surveys is to go through questions and then also write out full, qualified responses, plus any other relevant comments in an email, i.e. not to feel constrained by their questionnaire design.

The purpose of this survey is to conduct another survey to just keep asking the same questions until we get the answers we are looking for. Decisions have been made and we just need to be seen as doing something to ask around. How often does a survey or consultation lead to what the majority wanted or recommend?

Having a centralised function to process all firearms applications in a digital format with a single database would allow for a consistent approach and possibly a plastic card with a chip kind of FAC/ SGC that can be used to valdiate the ID of the person and the firearms. SGs, pistols etc they hold. Variations, renewals etc could be done online with no need to issue a new card, unless lost/ damaged. Can have a PIN like credit card for RFDs to validate the ID of the person holding the card for any purchase/ sale. For private sales, an online form can be submitted with details of both people to gurantee an immediate transfer or can be managed via a QR code. Also online validation of the documents could be done without having to post it to someone or taking photocopies.

Cost saving on postage, forms lost, phone calls, delays, extensions, printing, different standards/ recommendations should be worth it. A lot of these could be stramlined to make it efficient and painfree. Only if someone had the will.
