I had the pleasure of going out stalking with Sikajay and his son recently, and from the moment we arrived they were both incredibly welcoming, helpful, and accommodating.

Within minutes of entering the ground we spotted Chinese water deer. We tried to close the distance for a better look and a potential shot, but they moved off before we could make anything happen.

A short drive later we repositioned, and around 15 minutes after stopping again we spotted what looked like two CWD does resting in the middle of a dip. We carefully moved up to improve our angle, and even after another 15 minutes the deer were still happily laid up.

We moved forward one final time and I was able to get a clear view through the scope at just over 200 metres. It became a waiting game. A short while later a buck appeared, walking down the hill and interacting with one of the does. As she stood, all the deer began to move — and then a second buck revealed himself in the dip that we hadn’t previously been able to see.

I waited for the right opportunity and took my first successful broadside shot. Less than a minute later, I followed up with a second successful shot at around 100 metres with a clean headshot.

Afterwards, Jay talked me through the gralloch step by step and then let me carry it out myself, which was a brilliant learning experience.

All in all, fantastic ground, great deer, and an excellent day out. Jay runs his stalking extremely well and clearly cares about both the land and the experience he offers. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend his ground to anyone looking for well-managed stalking and a supportive, knowledgeable guide.
