Vet Bill

Ouch. Vaccines have consistently crept up around here, annual booster often around £50 or so. KC on top usually extra, varies but most places likely to charge another £20-30ish IIRC. Did you get any flea/worm treatment?

Corporate or independent practice?

Sorry you feel fobbed off.
No flea treatment / worming no.

It is an independent vet (family run) who primarily are into equine. The smaller pet care was always predominantly the "cash" business but in recent times they have become a lot more mainstream with their prices.

I think the big thing for me is the service. I am a firm believer of you get what you pay for, buy once cry once etc but recently I cant help feel that this has become the sales pitch but in reality we are expected to just feel gratitude that the business has managed to fit us in, irrelevant of the standard of service provided.

Maybe this is an Irish thing but customer service seems to be gone.

Not hating on vets btw

Difficult not to though.
I asked a vet for wormers the other day, Said they need to see the dog, as I have 3 I asked which one ? They replied “ All of them “
£80 a pop before prescribing £30 worth of wormers ( worth £3). I laughed then left

Quicker this investigation into vet malpractice and fraud takes place the better.

Actually now you mention it she did ask if I had Pet insurance.

When I replied no, she remarked that if I did I would need to get the vaccines repeated within the next 3 months as insurance companies now require it, to validate the policies.

She dismissed it in the same breath, knowing it wasn't going to happen.

That's her watching your back. Many insurance companies have getout clauses including upnto date vaccines. It may be there was a missed or late dose somewhere in the history. I'm guessing another client got caught out so she's trying to help others avoid it.

The need to see them is partly good practice but also because the regulator tightened up rules on prescribing a couple of years ago so they could allow remote companies in rather than just physical practices. I and @Buchan were among those who tried to stop the change as the system wasn't broken and it was deeply unpopular among vets and, I believe, clients as made things harder. Although I am staunchly against blanket prescribing of antiparasite treatments. The regulator is out of touch as it is no longer run by vets but lawyers/lay members. Long story but in trying to look more accountable by letting lay members onto the council, it started making worse decisions and becoming ineffective.

However, we used to offer free checks if prescribing flea/worm treatments, as long as that's all it was.

Brought the lab to the vet today. Got annual check up / vaccines and kennel cough jab.

Vet administered injections, put her on scales, tole me she needs to lose 4kg and charged me €100.

Never so much as looked in her mouth, ears etc or feel her over. Was on the table for 2 mins max after waiting an hour. Don't mind paying the rate but felt it was all very rushed and certainly not thorough.

Maybe I am being unrealistic...??
If the vaccination should include a health check ie heart lungs oral and a good feel round I would contact the surgery and explain you want it done properly. Give them a chance to put it right. I've had experiences with vets who I've just asked for a second opinion as I didn't rate the first one.
I put the health of my dog in front of offending someone.
Our local vets even say its vaccination and health check in there blurb and text and email reminders.

Hard to say anything other than ouch. And you absolutely should have had a full exam.
