Shooting hares to be banned for 9 months of the year.

The data is made up to suit the agenda; the agenda is to stop any rural pursuits that may cause upset to those unfortunate enough to live in cities and eat lentils every day.

I counted 106 hares on one field a week or so ago, the whole field looked like a decorated Christmas tree through the thermal
So more suspetable for disease yep you are right

That is exactly the problem as I see it. Management should be science (genuine science) based.
Not even this. Science is not apolitical. Conservation scientists are extremely politically biased and only study or produce data that suits their agenda. This is why, for example there is no recent scientific data on how healthy hare populations in England are and the absence of risk
Species that are struggling should be given a break and species that are over populated need knocking back a bit. I dont think closed seasons that take into account breeding season are contrary to that ideal. The shooting / hunting community seem, from the outside, so opposed to change of any sort that we are then not taken seriously when we object to things that really are bad management practice
This isn't a case of bad management practice though. If one wants hares managed better, the first step is for the police to enforce existing law and eliminate the widespread criminal poaching of hares. Like in so many other cases, we don't need more restrictive rules, we need the existing rules to be properly enforced.

I'm baffled. You didn't say anything similar in the post I replied to
Those victorian estates provided evidence that shooting of hares did nothing to affect hare numbers, especially combined with predator control. The records show quite clearly that the hare was the most commonly shot quarry. One could also argue that the sowing of green cover crops after harvest has helped the hare numbers, also the mild winters that we now have has extended the breeding season. I might add that predator control is not so important as the two combined effects. There are hundreds of acres around me here that have no predator control & no shortage of hares.

Well it can’t be a big issue. Presumably we all do that anyway. We don’t whack female deer during the breeding season either

Really?

Not sure where you’re looking, but there is plenty of current scientific data on hare populations, and much of it shows exactly what you’d expect: a largely stable population across the UK, with notable increases in some areas (such as lowland Scotland) and some decreases in others.

Please don’t confuse political claims and cherry picking for actual absence. Very few ecologists believe hares are at risk.

Fact is the Hare was previously GAME WITH A SEASON . With that removed the Hares then had an illness in many locations and its numbers has been hit on both those fronts . Some of the things IDIOT GOVENMENT DID WAS taking away the Hares breeding time via no more season . On top of that Hare Coursing was banned so the estates like Altcar had no more vested interest .
When folks talk of lamping Hares and shooting all year through and then complain when the Government decides they should have the season back ..... Then folks turn on me yet shoot Hare with lamps calling them vermin not Game without a legally enforced season I am very shocked and annoyed at the next generation of sportsmen want to shoot them at night with lights - I cannot call those people brother sportsmen , there is no sport in shooting hare under lights , you would be hard pushed to sell the carcasses and the Hare feeds on the hop ! Yeah try watching what they do and what they don't do as a selective feeder . Unlike a rabbit that will create bald areas .
Now I get they can be damaging to new planted tiny trees but a simple bio degradable shield on the saplings . I have shot hares when it was necessary but also i have taken them by shooting by daylight but also an odd one or two for the table ( IN SEASON )
Frankly i am shocked and disappointed of some of the comments , No real debate / discussion the future isn't that bright from what i am reading from many without real consideration from todays killers without thought

Around this part of the world from what I’m seeing & hearing there’s no need for debate/discussion - an excess of hares that need to be controlled/managed call it what you like. As for a route to market, yep, not as strong as it used to be but there is still a market for hares so not wasted.
I do sympathise with those who hold it as an iconic species & I do like to kick back & watch them during the day on a field……….but the numbers witnessed at night time do warrant managing.

You still havent told me what law im breaking?
Pest control is simple, if an animal is a pest and you control.
Land owners want them killed to stop coursing.
When did hares have a season?
What laws are lampers breaking?
I will await your learened response

In England & Wales I believe it was only the selling of hare carcases that was prohibited at certain times of year, not the actual shooting / taking of hares.
Hares have variously been defined as "ground game" (putting them on the same level as rabbits) and "game" (giving them a higher status) in different acts dating back to the 1800s.

The first hare I ever shot was under the lamp. It was one of the most thrilling hunting experiences I've had.
Prior to that my only experience of hunting hares was in the company of a Romany chap with a couple of amazing lurchers. But we didn’t get out of the vehicle, or even leave the road. The dogs did all the work.

Thats my understanding, legal to kill but not to offer for sale

The reason for ground game classification was I understand born from many a shooting estate having driven rabbit shoots and hares... They were keepered for the sport shooting by a line of guns just like pheasant shooting.
As these estates dwindled away the ground game status remained but shortly after the huge rabbit population got treated as vermin.
Hence a lot of confusion! Typical British law making really, protecting the interests of the establishment at the time....
Peaking with introducing cruel germ warfare to them with government backing and when that stopped working readily accepting and recieving a new virus from China despite warmings.
So when the government speaks of animal welfare they are speaking their usual bollocks and bull****, liars. They the governments of the ununited kingdom are the cruelest fckers of the lot!

The Voice of Shooting seems quiet? And as there is to be this change to our game laws will the chance be taken to push for making it clearly lawful to conduct the "catching up" of hen pheasants after 1 February? For say two weeks until Valentine's Day?

Are your posts drink fueled or can you actually post so much nonsense sober, some feat if so?!

I'm still waiting for an answer to a comment from a thread from maybe July so make yourself comfortable.

Don't think i've seen someone post so abrasively and irrationally angry and usually pretty wrong to boot.
With his consistantly wrong aproach, do you think he makes blades or lives in bowland?
