Highseat positioning.

No backstop and on a public footpath is a definite no.
Define a backstop please?
I am currently on a"closed / land deemed suitable condition " asked for a piece of land with no "textbook" backstop to be cleared for .243 on the proviso that I shot from high seats. Potentially similar ground to the OP on top of a hill with most of the land falling downward.
Granted with no problem.?

Yes, in an ideal world you would have a huge mound of soil behind the shot, but in reality you make the best of what you have?

It might be legal but if you get reported then your next fac renewal might prove to be a challenge. I still think there is a problem with no safe backstop if it’s as described.
He doesn't say that there's no backstop at all. Only that's no backstop for shots beyond 50m. Which is fine, provided the shooter knows the limits. Maybe a "muntjac highway" crosses the footpath just 40 yards from the seat? Sounds ideal!

I've a bridleway running right through the middle of my main permission. It splits two woods and the path winds down the hill with metal gates each end. The deer cross it when going between the woods.

It's absolutely safe to stand at the high point on sticks, giving you 50m odd of space to shoot anything crossing. A nice bank on each side of the path provides a good backstop. You can also see the gate at the bottom, and hear the gate behind you too.

Certainly no issues from a safe and legal aspect, but I would never put a high seat up there.

Every ground is different but if give a high seat on a footpath a very short shelf life.

For those who have been to mine will know; there is a bloody green lane straight through the middle of it, I wish it wasn’t, but it is, we shoot from it, on it and around it, I have no choice so I just get on with it

If you need to ask - Then you really must get sorted hands on help, there are a few hundreds of stalkers / guides who offer accompanied stalking . If its legal ? well before we even think of the legality we should be totally Ok about where and when we can take a shot .

Never mind green lanes , trespass is common AND YOUR IN DEEP TROUBLE IF YOU BAG A TRESPASSER OR HAVE A NEAR MISS etc ! It reads like you are just getting on with sending bullets where you cannot actually see the backdrop and a safe backstop, really hope i have this All wrong?

😂😂 you worry about your ground and I’ll worry about mine!!

I’ve only been on it 10 years 😂 i should have half an idea of what’s what 🙈

As for trespassers, you could have that problem on any piece of ground!

One of my pieces is cut into quarters by byways, with a footpath and another byway off of one end. Always busy with dog walkers, cyclists, green laners and these days, people living the ‘van life’. No rights of way on the fields themselves but people always pop up, usually just as you’re 45 minutes into stalking into a deer to bump it off!

I have still shot it perfectly safely for that last 10 or so years! (Bowlands won’t see this as he has me on ignore).

Exactly that, if you know your land to the inch like you should then situations where you , Greenlanes , by Ways etc are not an issue, I just walked out of the gate and goes stalking up the green lane always first port of call!

You really do have to wonder how anybody shoots any deer if they 💩 themselves worrying about foot paths / green lanes / by ways etc

I won’t make compromises and make the best of what I have got. If it isn’t safe I won’t shoot.

A back stop is sold ground, not a tree, hedge or forest, solid earth is what I define as a backstop
