Chrono Advice

For the amount of times you are likely to use it the magneto will be fine. If you want more regular use then the Athlon or Garmin is the way to go.

Ok - so started reloading and need a chrono.

Do I spend £175 on a mint SH Magneto V3
Or £389 on an Athlon
Or £429 on a garmin

Are the newer compact units worth the substantial price difference?

Thanks
I bought a mint V3 last year for £160 and mount it on my moderator. Once set up for a specific rifle it's very quick to take on and off. If you plan on using it for a range of rifles it could be a bit of a pain if you need to keep adjusting things. I'm very impressed with it.

It looks like the same add I was looking at.
One of the reviews says it's a scam.
They also say to contact them to arrange payment etc.
Another red flag is that it's just too cheap
well i hit the buy now button and it takes you to the normal aliexpress payment page, no request to contact the seller to pay them directly, only pay aliexpress. Never had any issue with the various items i have purchased via aliexpress.

I have the V3 but if I decide to change it later in the year, then I will try aliexpress, if the price is good.

I bought loads of stuff from them as well over the years.
Only problem I had was a coat I ordered for the missus that was delivered to the USA.
I got a full refund though.
Maybe it is ok. Seems very cheap though.

I moved to a Athlon, highly recommend it. Very simple and easy to use. Either that or a Garmin

FYI Aliexpress website raised a mass of security messages on my PC!

Having a chronograph for a hunting rifle is not really necessary, but is insightful.

Having a chronograph to determine how well and consistent your ammo is, it is absolutely beneficial (ES, SD, long string recordings for consistency testing, etc.). Just depends on how far down the "accuracy/consistency" rabbit hole you want to go.

Of the 3 mentioned, I'd say the Garmin gets the top recommendation.

The Magnetospeed is just a PITA to use, and wastes ammo, since it will most likely change your POI, requiring additional ammunition to verify zero (in addition to the ammo used to verify speed/consistency).

As to Athlon and Garmin (both good units), Garmin gets the nod. Simply because Garmin have been supporting small computerized devices for 30+ years now (remember all those Garmin mapping devices?). They literally wrote the book on how to manage, support and update a wide variety of devices with varying states of firmware ages (skipped the last 2 updates? No problem, Garmin understands which firmware version has what dependencies on previous firmware versions that you may have missed while the device was stored away). And nothing is more frustrating than buying a nice bit of kit, but having to battle with updating it.

Like I mentioned at the beginning; do you need one for hunting ammo? No. But it sure helps you understand the quality of your ammo, as variables change (new lot of powder, new batch of bullets, different brand primer); only a chrono will tell you the minute differences.

In addition, most UK reloaders don't load beyond more than 100rds at a time (be it component restriction limits, or practicality of how much ammo is used in a given year). But given that lack of volume, a chrono will help you narrow things down, between batches of ammo loaded. It most likely won't matter on a deer at 100yds, but it will as you learn how to make the most accurate ammo you can.

JMTCW....

No problems with my V3.

Was in the same boat, for the amount I use it I can live with bolting it to the end once and a while.

Load of people buy fancy chronograph thinking they are chris kyle and get fa benefit out of them.
