Lothian and Borders

Can anyone really explain why there are vast differences in the amount of ammunition to hold? Is it not time they get thier heads together and have a flat amount for us all.. I am lucky as i stay 2 miles from my supplier and i sympathise with anyone living in a remote location. What danger does holding say 400 rounds in a centrefire calibre over holding 80 as centrfire rounds are not the choice of the nutters?

different people need different amounts I suppose.
some people are happy with a couple of boxes of CF ammo, others want enough to start a war!

I have 650 holding and 500 purchase in each calibre, a record I think in strathclyde, but that is because I transferred from Northern and made sure I had full holdings before I moved.

I still fail to see why there really should be a number plucked from nowhere when you can go in and out of a gun shop 100 times a day and buy your allowance each time or visit each shop in your area then proceed to use them all in one session on the range then no one would care?

The amount of ammo held should not be governed by whatever Poice Authority that you reside within. It should be governed by your reasonable requirement. If in your application you can show requirement to hold/purchase whatever level of ammo this should be what is granted. Depending on your use of individual rifles held the ammo holding maybe different for each. At renewal the Police could have the option of reducing your holding dependant on use as you would have the option of increasing your holding should the need arise.

Your FAC has a condition on the amount of ammo that you can purchase and hold. If you exceed this then you are in breach of the condition and then committing an offence. So if you wish to retain your FAC you wouldn't do as you suggest.

When I first got my FAC, the FLO wanted to restrict me to purchase 20 and hold 40 for a 243. I explained that to zero, control vermin and stalk deer I would never be away fro the Gunshop. So this was upped to 100 purchase and 120 to hold. I am sure the FLO had a table with the quantities and and criteria to apply when he did his visit!

I was only pointing out what i was told by a RFD. He indicated the POSSIBLITY of multiple purchases of your allowance even in the same hour never mind day.

RD, It's fairly simple. You can purchase up to your purchase allowance as often as you like as long as you do not exceed your hold allowance. To do so would be in breach of your FAC conditions. In practical terms if you can purchase say 100 and hold 120 you could (assuming at the start you hold no ammo) purchase 100 at 9.00am (when the gun shop opens) use up 80 at your local firing range within an hour or however quickly you could do it, back to the gunshop and buy another 100 (now you hold 120), quickly use up 100, back to the shop for another 100 and so on till the shop closes as long as at no time you buy more than 100 and have in your possession more than 120. SIMPLES.

I can count GAZZA, and i know the law but i was just making the point that it seems mad that some get a low number and others get hundreds. I for one am very happy with both my allowances but others may not be. I was in Bushwear last year and a guy came in for an unbelievable amount of .17 HMR rounds and it was entered onto his FAC and he wasn't a dealer.

Rimfire rounds seem to fall into another group alltogether, I now have 900 to hold and 500 to buy. When I was in England and doing a lot of rabbits I hade 5000 on my ticket.

I am a Lothian & Borders certificate holder & i personally have never had any issues with them what so ever, they have always been great to deal with!

They allowed me permission to hold 1000 rounds of .22LR, 250 rounds of .223, 200 rounds of .25-06 & 80 rounds of .300 WinMag... 1530 rounds total.
I have permission for fox on all calibres & permission for deer on everything excpet the .22LR
Ive had an open ticket since i first applied for my licence all those years ago.
I applied for a 8 shot FAC shotgun for geese & pigeon control & got it no problem.

Everything ive every asked them for has been granted, i cant see how they could be any easier to deal with?

I also have 2 homes, one of which is in another police forces catchment.

Despite that i have cabinets fitted in both houses & they couldnt have been more helpful or understanding in sorting it all out.

I dont see what all the fuss is about.

unless they say "no" to a request, if you dont ask for more ammo then you can only blame the applicant if it comes back with buy 20 hold 40!

I had exactly that when I moved to L&B
as I shot more and started reloading I asked for buy 500 hold 600 and they didnt question it.
