Truck roof shooting rail

Finally got a Truckman top for my Hilux fitted, it’s the utility model with 3 doors, but sadly it has no roof rails or cleats for mounting same.

we shoot a number of farms with drivable tracks and the plan is to have a man stood on the rear door as we drive the tracks and lamp/shoot foxes as we do so.

Shooter will need:

Something to hold onto, a holder for the rifle, a rest to shoot off.

Has anyone had similar challenge and made up something that can be secured/loaded on and off the top.

I don’t want to drill the canopy if I can avoid it.

So standing on the open tailgate? Not ideal with the truckman as the rear door will need to be closed to allow it, which will prevent any form of security for the shooter, I don't think you can avoid drilling unless you put your faith in double side sticky tape or velcro. I have seen hatches and rails put on canopies but that involves a little more than drilling. Might be better removing the canopy and replace it when you're done shooting

Yes

I had that problem

I found high grip vacuum suction mounts with a bar across

Sufficient to keep your shooter anchored to the back of the pick up

I can't remember where they came from but I think they were a high performance roof rack system from somewhere

Worked though

It’s fibreglass so magnets wouldn’t work. Good idea on the suction cups, I actually have some in the garage that were bathroom supporting handles, they’ll be ideal!

I should’ve thought of that!

If you want someone standing on the open tailgate with a rifle , I suggest you fit a surround rail at waist hight with hand holds and an anchor point for a restraint.

Or be prepared to answer for a very bad situation when you have an accident .

Plan on having something to prevent me falling out alright :)

Being honest , I wasn’t having a dig at you or anything but driving about with someone standing on the tailgate is a bad idea , unless you come up with something like I suggested

I shoot from mine all the time , but only ever parked up waiting on foxes or deer.

Might even be better to remove the hardtop of your really want a standing shooter

I looked into having a shooting hatch on a new Hilux with a canopy by having a hatch from a Chandler, the GRP would need strengthening beams adding and was getting to much money. In the end i sold the top and had a bespoke aluminium top from N&J, the shooting hatch is big enough for 2 of us while out foxing, safe and secure.

Not cheap but its exactly what i wanted the truck for in the 1st place.
