Night shooting deer under CL55 - Police Notifications

Some of the areas with heavy populations of deer the police keep an eye out and any reports of "unusual activity" will get a visit. I know of lads who have had 3 shots at foxes and the next thing there are angry shouts of "leave those f***ing deer alone"..and the police have been called.

Ultimately we need to do our bit to comply with the law and these type of requirements, whether we agree with them or not. Same with copper when it comes .. end of 👍
Not really end of when these requirements are ridiculous is it

It’s a requirement so no real choice for those who are going to do it (sensible or not). I imagine there will be a lot more calls to the police of people shooting deer at night and at least if they know someone is out and about there may be fewer helicopters and armed response units called....lets see :)
Why would there be more calls for deer at night as opposed to foxes rabbits etc ?

Indeed, they just can’t help themselves. Always trying to micromanage us through legislation
A prime example I’ve a big patch in Lincolnshire on one hand it borders a FC wood , absolutely bouncing with deer, I emailed 9 months ago to see if anyone stalks it and offered to shoot the deer in the wood half a dozen emails “ we’re looking into it “ …. Useless

The moment you give some officious wee clerk an opportunity to make your life difficult, you can guarantee he'll seize it with both hands.

You have an FAC, and a night shooting permit. Just get on with it.

I have zero sympathy. This is a problem of our own creation. Turkeys and Christmas, indeed 🙄

Shooting deer at night bloody unbelievable
Any ramblers walk at night probably yes but how do you know if there out there I know of two fatal accidents by someone walking at night got fatally shot and another incident where a a horse was killed
Some idiots can't see if it's a deer a human or a horse
Should be stopped

There’s loads of people shot every year walking at night, normally in towns and cities……….

I recently informed West Mercia police of my intentions to carry out CL55 related deer management. They called, thanked me for the info and that was that. We briefly spoke about a quick call to 101 prior to any shooting and again when finished but they told me it wasn't necessary if I did not want to, and to basically crack on.

I will be sending the same notification in this week and also ask the question if they would be happy with just a date range of now until the season is over.

Point to note, I am not licensed under that force for my FAC.

As per the license condition, I also notified my Firearms Licensing Department and am yet to even get a response.

Most shooters these days use thermal to spot at night so very safe. Don't judge everyone else by your standards , night shooting is just as safe as daylight shooting. The onus is always on the shooter to be safe and positively ID your quarry.

People get killed on the roads every day should we stop driving ?

Dorset Police are quite switched on with this......you ring in to the control room and ask to be added to the shooting log. They ask name, contact number, where you are shooting, what time you are shooting (from and until) what you are shooting and what with, who is out with you and car make/reg. They then give you a log reference...simples!

I disagree with the onus of "24 hours before" because sometimes it's a decision made on the day dependant on weather, family, work, moon phase, price of potatoes etc.

Not had any issues with Plod over this.

Think you have lost the plot there mate. Plenty of us who have been shooting at night for decades without issue.

Maybe best not to comment on something you clearly have no idea about. Or perhaps I should phrase it as "some idiots should be banned from posting nonsense" 👍

I did kind of cover this above but appreciate the point. This is in one area I shoot in Devon and I think the police were making the point that they would react quickly to reports of deer poaching (whether they do or not is another matter).

I have never notified the police when out after foxes or rabbits as it is not a requirement...if it was I would.

We need to be responsible and stick to the rules whether we want to or not. Back to copper...when lead is banned anyone who says that they will carry on regardless is a fool as you are admitting to breaking the law and risking something we are all really passionate about. I hate driving at 20 mph in most welsh villages...but I do. I will wait for the abuse to start :)👍
