Apparently this was for their own good?

I’m no expert but I assume either the alpha male/female died or was removed.

Or possibly the because they are limited in space the problem wolf was unable to get away and was getting bullied, which is where “rewilding” in fenced areas is no different from any other zoo.

Putting down all 5 animals seems extreme in my opinion.

My question would be "why did they have them to begin with"? I'm guessing ( with no knowledge of the situation) that they were staging this pack for a potential future release. I think you may have all dodged a stray bullet with this outcome. If you think I'm being cynical, you're absolutely right because I have lived through and am still living with the lies and propaganda that led to wolves being released in my own state.

That must have been a cage full of miserable animals. Never to be able to actually hunt 😔

Almost as depressing as the tiger place on the IoW, seeing those creatures caged in such a totally unsuitable environment and climate is the most soul destroying experience of my life.

I had not thought of it like that but you're absolutely right ie the wolves. The tiger cages I find equally depressing watching them pace nervously all day while people ohh and aww. I've often thought of sneaking into a zoo at night and chucking a few goats into the big cat cages. Let them be a tiger/lion/ leopard again if even for just one night. Bet they would sleep well the next day.

Without knowing the exact situation in Colorado and what went wrong. The big difference is the amount of space. There’s very little wilderness in the UK and the few places we do have usually have sheep on them anyway.

Considering your amount of space or lack thereof would be a logical approach, but these people aren't interested in that because the reasons they give for reintroduction are based mostly on lies. I'll say it again, this is about "restoring the balance" in order to stop hunting and animal husbandry. Its quite frankly a brilliant approach because few have woke up and realized what is happening. They quite frankly don't care about your sheep because you are a bad person (in their eyes) for raising them for slaughter in the first place.

2.5m deer in the UK on a 1:10 ratio (considered the correct one) that’s 250,000 wolves for us to maintain balance, to reduce the numbers we’ll have to go way higher.

Colorado is a state that did almost everything wrong. The release was voted for by the urbanites, not the folks that actually had to love with them. Then, they imported a pack with a known predilection for livestock killing and then acted surprised when they started killing livestock. This went unabated until the new presidential administration revoked their permit to transport wolves across state lines. Now they are in the process of packing the fish and game commission with leftist greenies so that they can override any votes that make sense and are science based.

No, not being staged for release. Just zoo animals kept for spectacle.

Arguments about re-introduction to one side, I think keeping any large carnivores in captivity is profoundly unethical unless there’s absolutely no alternative in order to save a species. Even then, it should be a temporary stop gap until suitable habitat in a protected area becomes available.
