Well done
The start was 700 yards the finish was just over 40--44 (?) For the anti camo crowd you wont do what I got done without it..hes looking at me with suspicion but stayed long enough for some video and photos. Thats one hint that will help with these deer especially the boys.... if you are in your jeans and they see you they just GO!

That's a pretty good effort in any ones book. :thumb:
Camo?....yes...yes...yes...it's an absolute must for close in stalking of sambar...whether you know a deer is there or not. There's more to it of course as John said...but camo is a start.

Ah there are those that will tell all and sundry that it is not a necessity of course, one bloke on here railed on and on as an anti camo expert, he didn't reply when I asked "how are you such an expert when you don't use it"

In reality to get close to sambar or any other deer species proper camo increases the hunter/photographers chances immensely.
Its not mandatory and there are many even here that pooh pooh it, but then there are many that illegally shoot them at night claiming camo isn't necessary..****tards. This pic as he is chewing his cud was taken after he had seen the lump, the shape, the thing, the me' and he was eyeballing me as I had my eye up to the lens. I can say that if I hadn't blended in he would have made me as human...gone in a split second. I actually feel that he saw my tripod shine,I have painted others previously but they struggle to collapse with the extra layer of paint. When sitting I will take an old 3d camo jacket and drape over the tripod. 3D is the way to go.

Have you won the Swarovski as well?

Says 2026 winner John Griffin..err that be me ha ha.

Clothing/camo/movement is an interesting subject. I've put in a massive amount of time experimenting with different camo patterns...still haven't found one I'm completely happy with and the need for cool clothes in summer and warm/waterproof clothes in winter complicates/narrows choices. Silent clothes are necessary as are hat, gloves and face masks. The lower body can be any drab colour but from the waist above it must be camo. Also critical is the "right" brand of personal deodorant.

I hunt for the challenge/excitement of the hunt not so much the shot. The number of occasions when sambar approach me is incredible. For example...

Mid morning I came across 2 hinds and 2 stags bunched up and gorging on spring blackberry vines. There was another sambar feeding out of sight I could hear feeding...they tend to shuffle their front feet as they twist and stretch reaching for an extra tasty morsel. I stood in the open about 20 odd yards from them. They saw me. The four of them turned and very slowly approached me. I decided to see what I could get away with and shouldered my rifle and back down again a couple of times. No reaction. So I crouched down. Nothing so I stood up again. Still no reaction. The two stags took a coupler of steps towards me and the two hinds turned and casually wandered off to join the unseen deer. I did the squatting and standing thing again and still no reaction. The bigger stag turned and he ambled off to join the hinds. The remaining stag advanced to some 6 or so yards away and stretched his neck up high trying to look down on me to determine what I was. At this one shot from the 30/06 put a Norma Yellow Tip in his throat and down he wen with that backwards summersault they all do when throat shot from the front.

Beautiful pics as usual John. Shame you don't get snow where you live. My favorite thing is hunting in snow camo. Nearly invisible to animals. Once had a staring contest with a cow elk at five yards after my rifle went click rather than boom. Was winter and I was in white head to toe. She eventually walked away none the wiser.

I see Argarli hunter videos at times in the white camo, makes sense to me. I have always loved snow in the deer country, there is something serene and beautiful when out and about in it.

And just for you Scott...my old 7MM RM ready to spit......against Pom rules but its got three down and one in the pipe...heaven help any dog that runs up the farm track lol. Oh yes,the keen eye will note the 3 pos safety is back.

Well I'll be damned, that is snow. Nice to know there's at least one place or season where stingey, bitey and chompy things aren't trying to kill you.

Yes feet up by a big log fire in a snow camp and a ****ing great brown snake (angry) coming out of the log has the boys jumping ha ha ha

But you are correct Scott, winter is great no mosquitos,no jack jumper ants,no bulldog ants,no snakes, no flies scorpions,centipedes...oh but there are still leeches lol. I ****ing hate leeches as I itch for weeks after the bites.
