Worth a medal? Muntjac

So.. my first proper post! I know nothing about medals or measuring.. but, is this a medal Muntjac?

Length left beam - 14cm, broken tip.
Length right beam - 12cm broken tip.
Inside span at middle of antlers is 11.1cm.
Brow tines are non existent really. Left is worn down to a mere lump, maybe 3mm. Right is also worn down, maybe 8-10mm tall.
Coronet circumference is 8.5cm on left and 9.5cm on right. Circumference of antler at middle point is 5.1cm on each.

Measurements may be off at I was using string and it’s my first time!

But yes that sounds like it would medal, easiest thing is to get it done properly and if it doesn’t qualify there’s no charge

He’ll lose points on the coronets but his length and span might help there, there’s also not a massive diameter mid beam but should be a medal i’d have thought, only one way to know for sure

Taking those measurements at face value, the score would be 62.9 which is a gold medal score.

However, as you say, you were using string & the measurements may be off... plus, the CIC measurements are pretty strict & even if your numbers had been obtained using a flexible tailors tape measure for example, I'd expect them to be higher than any CIC measurements.

You can find your nearest CIC assessor on their website with email & phone numbers so get in touch & see what they make it - you'll only be charged for the service if the head makes a medal score.

I thought Munty had to have a 1.5cm brow tine to qualify under CiC
Each brow tine must measure a minimum of 1.0 cm to score. If either is below that neither will count in the final score. I’ve got an ancient old buck that still made gold despite having no brow tines at all.

As of 2026 there’s a slight change to this. The owner of a head that in the opinion of the measurer would not qualify for a medal will be advised of this before measuring commences, if they opt to go ahead and it fails to make a bronze there will be a charge of £15.

The key issue with scoring muntjac is symmetry, the differences between the antlers would possibly cost you 4 points making it a marginal gold at the new threshold of 64, my guess would be that it’s a big silver. Did you ever get it scored?

I'm in a similar situation - wondering if to get a buck I shot a few weeks ago measured.

I have a question about brow tines - are they measured from the coronet, or measured from where it branches out from the main beam of the antler?
Trying to work out if this buck is worth sending off or not.
Cheers,

Sandy
