First teckel questions

Just found out what mine are shouting through / at the front windows,
Spicysausagedogs:

So, who does anything with their little monsters coat in their first year, and what if anything, our is getting warm some days but we dont want to risk starting too early?

Cheers

Others more knowledgeable will be along shortly to advise, but I believe you need to start stripping early and then stick with it. Sadly, our boy's bollocks didn't descend so at the year point, they were removed. His coat went from being wiry to soft - I have literally just dropped the "hairy haggis" off at the groomers because he's been overheating so much recently. Problem is he has to be clipped and I've just been shouted at for letting his hair get so matted 🙇‍♂️

We'll see whether I will be invited to dinner tonight later!"

Slightly off on a tangent I know, but I’d be keen to hear from other teckel owners re protective wear to render stinging nettles less of an issue. My bitch is coming on nicely as a stalking companion but she does struggle on a lot of the ground I stalk because of the nettle growth. I’ve seen teckels in the States wearing boots and all sorts. Anyone else face similar issues?IMG_1489.webp

That's the wee beastie right now, recently showered, dried and combed.
The hair is pulling out easily and malting now, and is much softer than looks in the pics, infact its not wirey at all. There is a softer undercoat but I dont know if it will leave too little of a coat if its done, and will it be grown back by winter?

Cheers

As advised above, sadly mine’s coat is totally soft and the only wiry bit is on his tail. A couple of before after pictures below following his shearing yesterday - at least he won’t be so hot and it’ll be easier to find the ticks; 5 this week so far!

I did get dinner, but it was a close thing.

If it is pulling out easily it should be ready to strip...certainly looks like it is! Then strip every 6 months or so. If the coat is soft stripping will, over time, make it more coarse.

The pups with the best coats are the ones that look almost smooth, save wispy ear tips and wispy chest hair at 8 weeks. Hair present between the underside of the toes can also be an indicator. Pups that look like true wires at 8 weeks will probably end up on the soft side - but regular stripping can improve.

Personally I like a recessive smooth (RSP02ff) from two wire parents - just like Scribblers - It should still be a good maintenance free working coat. From a breeding perspective the recessive smooth is very useful as when mated to a hairy soft coated (RSP02FF) is almost guaranteed to produce a litter of very good coats (RSP02Ff). I believe the Germans prohibited the breeding from recessive smooths which doesn't really follow the science. The best coats I ever bred were from my recessive smooth bitch, Bella - Ginger von den Konigstannen
