Bino Harness for Leica Geovid Pro + Thermal

Sorry for yet another bino harness thread, but I hope this one's a little bit different!

I'm currently considering upgrading to a pair of Leica Geovid Pro 10x42s which means replacing my current Marsupial Enclosed harness (size small) at the same time. I've been very happy with the Marsupial overall, but the small won't fit the Geovids and I've never found the side attachment options ideal for carrying my HikMicro Condor 2.0 CQ35 thermal, which currently lives in its factory pouch attached via cable ties to the harness buckles. If I use the MOLLE on the rear of the thermal pouch and mount it directly to the harness strap it sits too low to be practical, so I've never really found a neat solution.

As the small won't accommodate the Geovids anyway, it seemed like a good opportunity to look at what other options are out there before simply ordering a medium Marsupial.

One of the things I'm struggling with is harness fitment for the Geovid Pro. Marsupial recommend their medium Enclosed, but looking at the published dimensions some of these harnesses appear incredibly tight on paper. For example, the Geovid Pro is listed at 2.8" deep and the Marsupial medium is quoted at 2.75" internal depth, so it already looks slightly oversized on paper. I also intend to store mine with the eye cups extended which will add to the length. Yet plenty of people seem to run Geovids in harnesses that look too small on paper, so I'd be very interested to hear from anyone with real-world experience of fitting Geovids into these systems.

The other thing I'm trying to get my head around is the magnet vs non-magnet debate. My primary use will be ranging and ballistic solutions rather than ProTrack, which utilises the compass feature, but equally I don't want to buy a magnetic harness only to discover I'm constantly recalibrating the compass if/when I try to use ProTrack. That said, I do really like how the magnetic lid stays open and allows easy one-handed operation. On the flip side, I've read a fair number of comments suggesting some of the no-mag options don't stay open as well and can be a bit more awkward to use one-handed, so I'd be keen to hear from anyone who's used both systems in the field with compass-equipped binos.

In an ideal world I'd like a forward-opening harness with MOLLE wings or similar attachment points so I can securely mount the Condor pouch on one side and perhaps another utility pouch on the other. Rear-opening designs such as the Sitka or Alaska Guide aren't really what I'm looking for.

I appreciate there are other ways of carrying a thermal, such as running it on a lanyard or clipping it directly to the side of a harness. However, I'd ideally like to keep it in an enclosed pouch. One of the things I like about the factory Condor pouch is that I can put the thermal away and close the lid when moving between locations or if the weather turns, so weather protection is quite important to me.

Current shortlist:
  • Marsupial Enclosed (Medium)
  • Marsupial No-Mag
  • Eberlestock Recon
  • Eberlestock Bravo
I'm happy to import from outside the UK if the cost is reasonable. I bought my current Marsupial direct from them without any issues. That said, if there's a strong UK-available option I've overlooked I'd be glad to hear about it.

So my questions are:
  • What harness are Geovid Pro owners actually using?
  • Have you experienced any issues with magnetic closures and the built-in compass/LRF electronics?
  • Has anyone found a good solution for carrying a thermal alongside their binos?
Any feedback gratefully received. Thanks!

First off I will say that I’m a massive fan of the Marsupial bino caddy - best out there - wish they did an XL version for the Habrocks/Symbions which are just too long and a bit tight for a large.

I would always go magnet - best feature there is on any caddy available - frigging hate my Kuiu XL as the hood constantly rides up.

Anyhoo - pic of a standard set of 8x42s in a medium marsupial - think your going to struggle with a medium so would suggest large.

When I had Zeiss HT RFs and Swaro RFs, they both worked well in a large.

Had Pulsar Accolades in a medium - no issues with electronics.

Another caddy worth considering is the Kuiu Pro - size wise it will be fine, has a magnetic lid like the Marsupial and has two built in side pockets large enough for a small thermal.

That's really useful, thanks.

My concern with the Geovid Pro specifically is that the LRF housing sits within the bridge and with the porro prism body not being a clean straight line, I suspect it'll behave quite differently to a standard bino in terms of how it sits in the pouch. I'll be keeping my current small Marsupial until the Geovids arrive so I can at least check the depth before committing to a size.

Good to know you had no issues with electronics. I think I'll go magnetic if it's not going to cause problems.

The KUIU is tempting but my thermal is a fairly chunky unit with an integrated LRF on the bottom, so I'm not sure the side pockets would swallow it.

I've got an eberlestock recon for my geovids, with a molle pouch for my thermal on one side and another for a first aid kit on the other, I find it very comfy as well as very quiet

The Geovids are large and heavy! I’ve had a set of HD-B’s for a long time but having dallied with a set of rangefinding GPO 10x32, I bit the bullet and acquired a set of 10x32 Geovid Pro. Much smaller but not a lot lighter, maybe 3 oz.

Anyway, I’ve been a great advocate of Alaskan Guide Creations Classic packs. Lots of room plus pockets but no Molle wings, but you can carry a lot of stuff on the straps as per the pictures. I recently tried a Harkila pack with wings but quite tight on my 10x32s! Bought an Elberstock Bravo large and whilst it ticks most of the boxes, it’s a very tight for the 32’s - no way do 42’s fit! At the moment I am persevering with the Elberstock as it takes my Dracos too but I’m still searching for a better option.

The HD-B 10x42 are in the pack.

Marsupial large fits geovids (I had geovids but went back to a separate rangefinder and noctovid binos)
I can't comment on the condor pouch situation, but I run a nocpix lumi which sits nicely in a smoke grenade pouch... which I simply put onto the side strap of my harness...

Do you know what size you went for? And how is it getting the binos in and out?

That’s really useful, thanks. The Erblestock dimensions do seem to be some of the smallest depth-wise which is a concern.

Looks like a comprehensive rig for sure. My main reason for not considering the ACG was the rearward opening of the bino compartment. I’m so used to being able to hold open the lid for quick access, particularly if I’m jumping between binos and thermal. Will definitely have a look though as I know they get a lot of love!

That’s good to know! How was it getting the binos in and out? I’ve read elsewhere some people found there was a break-in period until they’d stretched out a bit.

Now that’s interesting! Could be the one! Easy enough getting the thermal in and out one handed?

I tend to have three stowage options.

1. In the pouch zipped up when no longer needed.
2. In the pouch zip open when gong through cover, over and fence etc etc. on hand but easily removable in an instant.
3. Outside the pouch clipped to another part of the harness using a pocket clip like the below. More of a resting place when not in hand basically. For example deer seen rifle on sticks and making quick changes between glass and thermal while tracking movement through cover.

Having had Harkila, Emberstock, FHF, HIK Micro and few others this Kuiu one just works.

Hmm definitely sounds like this could be the one and the pocket clip is a smart idea. Do you have any pictures of the clip on the thermal? Keen to see where you mounted it.

Do you know what size you went for? And how is it getting the binos in and out?
Not entirely sure as I bought them second hand on here, I'll measure tomorrow, they do have foam inserts in the bottom so possibly XL, binos go in and out smoothly, I have added clips to the elastic straps that attach to the binos so I can disconnect them quickly if need be

That's good to hear, thanks. On paper the Recon is quite a small depth compared to the binos so it's good to know they can stretch sufficiently.

I got a Sabre Pathfinder Compact from NZ and did a bit of a write up the other day. Lots of modularity and MOLLE.

Here

They do a slightly bigger version called the Pathfinder. Can’t speak highly enough of their kit or customer service.
