270 Winchester powder recommendations

Evening all,

I've finally acquired all necessary bits to start reloading.

After some searches on here and online there seems to be quite a few powders that you can no longer buy in the UK and I was hoping someone might have a recommendation on a powder for me to get started with. I'm ideally wanting to get the right load with something that's going to be available for a while.
I am going to be downloading Gordon's reloading tool to get me started and have a friend who's reloaded for years going to aid me on my first set of loads to avoid any mistakes.

For info I'm shooting once fired norma brass and debating between 120 Sako or 130 ttsx Barnes.

Any info really would be appreciated.

Walk before you run. Start here : Vihtvavouri 270 loads

Forget Gordon’s for now. Just pick a bullet like the one you are going to use if the exact one isn’t there ie copper load for copper bullet, same weight. Load to COAL.

Forget hunting for nodes or optimising length.

Get powder loads consistent

Load them straight ie quality dies

Reloading is a rabbit hole with no end. Just get some decent accuracy out of your first loads and go with that for now. You can chase reloading voodoo endlessly for no actual gain

We use n165 with 150 heads so a bit heaver than your weights. 2750 is the speed

I agree. For 150 grain 2,750fps or thereabouts is all you need. I used to go slightly faster over a chronograph and was getting 2,800fps as my rifles had 23.5" or 24" barrels as against 22" on a Remington 700 and used H4831 or later Viht N160 this with Hornandy 150 grain Interlock.

I did look at the website but I have had a few friends using that powder having some variations from the load data, but happy to try it for myself and see what happens.

Definitely a rabbit hole can be gone down I'm just wanting consistency so will be going baby steps to get it grouping well and consistently so I can use it out on a stalk. My current factory ammo is quite good but heavily priced and hoping I can increase accuracy and decrease the price somewhat over time

I am disposing of my .270 so I'll the have only a .30-06. Therefore in anyone in near to, or passing J21 or J21A of the M1 at Leicester (M1/M69 Interchange) I have a quantity of factory 150 grain ammunition that they can have for nominal cost say 60p a round. The ammunition is Remington Core-Lokt and RWS Evolution which is a capped 154 grain bullet. PM me. FAC only and it will need to be entered on that FAC.

Especially if you are just starting reloading, it would be preferable to forget about Gordon’s Reloading Tool and - if you don’t already have one - obtain one or more good reloading manuals such as produced by Lyman or Hornady (to name just two) that not only have properly tested load data but also chapters on how to reload.

Stick to published loads - not friends advice.

Your manuals along with online data from Vihtavuori for instance will show you the various usable powders - after that it's a matter of picking one that's available in your area, Vihtavuori is generally one of the most readily available brands & has several powders well suited to the bullets you mention.

I use N160 for 130gr, and I guess I'd use it for 120gr also.

Viht N160 + fox 130g work well. I use on munties, roe, fallow and reds. Load to fox factory data, maybe tweak COL to suit your mag or chamber.

I am currently using Alliant RL22 but will likely change soon as the current rates when you get it are getting silly now.

I spent ages working up a lovely load for my .270 with 130gr bullets and Hunter, only to find my most local supplier no longer has it. A search reveals none for sale within about 80 miles !

At the moment my own powder store as iv got plenty. However usually from my local sportsman gun centre or other local reloading suppliers down here in Devon. All are currently out of stock and cant give me an ETA unfortunately.
