Advice in calibers

6.5 Sweed is one of the more common rounds ! Local small RFDs might not be the best choice? I really don't get why any regular shooter would not home load. It allows a constant flow of ammo AT FAR LEST COST
That is not necessarily true mate as it depends on the cost of all the kit. If you think about load development you will "waste" 20-30 rounds as an absolute minimum. I do it but its not driven by costs its driven by accuracy, availability and being in control. Maybe after I have fired a few thousand rounds it will end up being cheaper but not for a while yet. Yes I could have got cheaper kit but you get what you pay for.
This is the crux of it, availability and supply aside, from a cost point of view if you only shoot 20 rounds a month it will take a long time to cover the outlay. If you get through 50-100 it will pay for itself quite quickly.
Cheaper (but perfectly good) kit will be paid off a lot sooner and load ammunition 99.9% as good.
Agree and see you point about the cheaper kit. The only thing I purchased new were the dies and press and I went RCBS.. and probably it makes very little difference but I am happy with it and I get the accuracy I want

Would upgrade but the money seems to go on guns, scopes, bullets and powder
The concept of saving money went out the window for me a long time ago ....but I love my hobby (most of the time) dont have kids and dont drink much or go on expensive holidays...so spend it all on shooting ...then spend some more....Every time I talk the boss she reminds me how much longer I will need to work to pay for the "essential extras"If I had the money I’d have gone RCBS on the press, but to be fair, apart from a new linkage the secondhand Lee press has done me proud.

You could give me a £100k Westley richards rifle for free, jaw dropping beauty, but in .308, I’d pass.
Just find a round your 6.5 likes and buy a couple years worth of stock. If you need a bigger ammo allowance it’s easy to justify based on lack of availability and need to purchase in bulk.
Buying in bulk, you should be able to negotiate a lower price too,

2 kids to temper my spending, still wind up spending a lump on shooting, but there’s worse vices to have!
After shooting deer for over 30 years mainly using 308, a few years of 6.5CM I can not understand the hype of a 6.5 unless one is a dog trainer. The 6.5's with high bc bullets can have an advantage over 500m but that doesn't happen often. In all other cases the 308 just takes deer down better from what I have seen.

I was only joking. Indeed, I used just one rifle for the first 12 years of my stalking (Parker Hale .270) - main reason, I was bringing up a family with three kids and couldn't really afford more. I am playing the field a bit now, but can see me ending my stalking days with just one set-up.........My Schultz and Larsen Victory in .308 might just be 'that' rifle.Nope

Indeed, I used just one rifle for the first 12 years of my stalking (Parker Hale .270) - main reason, I was bringing up a family with three kids and couldn't really afford more. I am playing the field a bit now, but can see me ending my stalking days with just one set-up.........My Schultz and Larsen Victory in .308 might just be 'that' rifle.

Only having 1 rifle teaches you restraint as well as confidence!
I once said many many many years ago, I would shoot anything up to dangerous game with my old rust bucket Ruger and 130gn Barnes bullet and I still stand by that even though I now shoot a 7x57 and the bullet is 150gn barnes now that’s confidence!

Far too much guff spoken about calibres for UK deer stalking. 6mm's, 6.5's, .270, .308.......blah blah. They all pretty much do the same job within 250m with the right bullet in the right place.
Trying new calibres is fun, buying new rifles is fun - as long as you can justify your decision with the missus - nothing else matters.
