Hare coursers cause havoc again.

It’s live streamed for Far Eastern betting rings. Billions sloshing about in that arena as they’ll bet on two raindrops on a window pane. That’s why the hares time is limited. The police and courts won’t solve the problem so if the hares are removed from the land the problem becomes someone else’s issue.

Only way to stop it is get rid of the dogs.

They are frequently indifferently dumped. Hounds equally do not deserve the vicious life imposed on them by so many unscrupulous handlers. I am lucky to have a terrific Lurcher in the family whose condition when she was rescued was utterly disgusting. Illegal coursing has no place in our countryside on so many levels.

What's wrong with killing hares with dogs?
Nothing that I can see.
It's certainly not unsporting.
I'd rather see that than a pack of hounds after a fox.

It’s unsporting when it done at night with lamps and when the dogs are let loose directly onto the hares, as opposed to a coursing slipper whose job it was to get the dogs to turn the hare and not kill it!

People wonder why some farmers want Hares shot on sight, no Hares no Dog men simple. Last time we chased a gang of so called "Coursing men " off the farm a week later a £10,000 irrigation pump went missing with matching tyre marks !! Best of it all it turned up 3 days later for sale on Ebay at a local "Holiday site" !! Police did nothing and the insurance paid for a new one. Everyone was a winner except the insurance company

Wonder if the law can be amended to allow farmers to shoot dogs worrying wildlife.

They dump the failures im sure but the winning dogs are what they prize, dead dogs dont get run. Anything else is just an annoyance

But personally, I can't see any "sport" in prolonging the chase of a wild animal, whether that's a hare, a fox or a driven pheasant!
Get in close and kill quickly and cleanly is the best sport, in my opinion. And if that means walking up to a hare in the beam of a lamp before slipping the dog, then that's the best way, imo.

So, while I do not condone illegal coursing in any shape or form, or even legal coursing, to say that killing a hare with a dog "breaches all of the sporting decency rules that I and I hope many on here hold dear to their hearts", as you did in post #13, I think needs challenging.
There's nothing wrong with killing a hare with a dog if the chase is short and the death is quick. There's lot's wrong with hunting a hare with a dog if the chase is deliberately prolonged for the purpose of "sport" and gambling.

The "sporting chance" argument doesn't hold water on a deer stalking forum. We don't chase our deer and shoot them on the run. That would be frowned on in the UK, would it not? The sole aim of stalking is to give the deer as little chance of avoiding a clean death as possible. Unsporting?

Betting on sporting events is quite normal though, isn't it? Horse racing, for example. So you can't really say that the fact that gambling takes places automatically renders something "unsporting". Unpalatable may be, but I don't think it defines whether or not an activity is "sporting".

100% correct - I used to follow the East Anglian Whippet Coursing Club and The Anglia Lurcher Owners Club alongside the Swaffham Coursing Club's Greyhound meets in Norfolk.

Sadly these disgraceful idiots are giving our noble old sport a bad name.

Ah, it was a long shot. I lost contact with him when I had my mobile phone pinched at the Ally Pally.
I loved the Whippets. Tony's dogs were good. He conditioned them by taking them lamping rabbits while he did his nighttime rounds on the quad. He only ever ran them on hares at the meets.
Somerleyton Hall was a nice venue.

One day, I wasn't paying attention, one of his dogs joined in a course when I should have been holding its lead - followed the two coursing dogs with its lead trailing behind it............................Never been so embarrassed
