Knives from old files, first go at forging

Hi Digger, have you considered making one from some railway line ?

Cheers, Sharpie.

Hallo mate,

I have considered railway track, got tons of it laying around just down the hill in Bodiam..... It's good stuff, and many folk get by with it, but for blade smithing i really need (or at least feel i need) the typical flat top and horn type of anvil, a double bick one would be the ultimate goal for me, a bit like these yins:

Top right one here:

But, at the stage I'm at, anything i can get would do as long as it's got a good flat top and is a 1.5 CWT or above;)

Got the forge home this evening, just Had to fire it up!

Chucked in a file that i bought from a boot fair at Holkham/Wells-next-the-sea one time when i was up with Glyn:

I was really pleased with how quickly it got the steel hot enough to forge, the gas one i used was much slower to get them up to temp.:thumb:

Watched a knife being made out of chainsaw chain. Very interesting and beautiful finish. Makes me want to try it!

I've seen that chainsaw chain thing too, very interesting, came up like damascus.

As it happens, I have a mate who's just bought a forge and I have a bag full of old saw chains!

I've heard of it being done with wire rope too but not seen the results.

Glyn.

I sense that on my next foray to the wilds of Norf Norfolk i will be carting a certain new acquisition along so the chaps can have a play!

Here's a lad doing a chainsaw chain knife:

The white powder they're sprinkling on the hot steel is Borax, it's a flux used for forge welding.

Well, it ain't no knife, but it is the first forge project I've completed! In case you can't tell, it's a candle holder:rolleyes:

Did it for a friends 40th birthday. It goes well in his house, an old castle gate house:

The photos are terrible! I took them just before i got to his house, it was still warm from the forge when i put it in his hands!:D

Well, got in the forge all day Saturday and tried my hand at Forge Welding two types of steel together. First go at something 'Technical', ended up with This monstrosity of a knife blade:

You can see the different layers, 28 of them in fact after two folds of a 7 piece billet:british:

Hi Digger

Certainly an impressive piece of forge welding, it is amazing and must be satisfying what you can make when you put your mind to it, being able to make something on a forge that will give as many years service.

Keep us in the loop on progress, very interesting thread.
