6.5 x 47 lapua users - hunting specific

any updates on the 6.5 anyone.

ive had some reasonable results with some poorly seated ammo and have killed a few things with mine, looking forward to developing some accurate loads when i get time.

have 123 amax, 120 ballistic tips and 120 prohunters, varget, h4350, cci br4's and cci magnum 450's

and a chargemaster combo and wilson dies!!

Am I missing something ? 6.5x55 has been around since WW2 with lots of rifle and ammo options and is generally held to be a well developed and reliable calibre so apart from being "different", and I admit to buying items in the past just to be able to say this (yes I know - sad), has 6.5x47 got atributes over 6.5x55 I am not aware of ??

Designed specifically as a 300m match cartridge to outperform 6mmBR Norma in that application and with better magazine feeding for CISM disciplines. Uses a standard .473 bolt face and short .308Win length action which fits even long, heavy and very high BC bullets when seated long. Uses small rifle primers so the case can withstand up to 63kpsi. Its a great little cartridge!
Nothing wrong with the 6.5x55, just an older design for intermediate Mauser actions with a .480 bolt face and factory loaded to around 55kpsi.

more efficient - less powder for the same velocity due to the higher operating pressure
Lapua clearly saw an advantage in it and developed it for match shooting even though they already had their own 6.5x55 brass. It turns out that a cartridge optimised for 300-600 yards target shooting turns out to be fantastic for deer at 0-300ish yards. I had a 6.5x55 and really liked it, but I like my x47 more

My 243 is 9lb, the 47 lap is 12lb. Lap is less when in lower accuracy node, but at higher levels its quite snappy, but still don't loose sight picture. They both kick straight. 243 shoots 70gn, the 47 shoots 120's. Much less than a 308.

I USE 95 GRAIN V MAX FOR FOXES IN MY TIKKA 595 ACTION SEMI CUSTOM WITH A 24 INCH LOTHAR WALTHER 1 IN 9 TWIST HEAVY STAINLESS BARREL.123 SCENARS FOR TARGET SHOOTING.FOR THE 95 LOAD BRASS IS LAPUA WITH 450 MAG PRIMERS AND 38.5 GRAINS OF VARGET.WHILE WORKING UP A LOAD I ALSO FOUND THAT 37.5 GRAINS OF VARGET TO BE VERY ACCURATE IF A LITTLE LOW ON VELOCITY.STILL EXPERIMENTING.rICHARD.

yes your missing a lot of facts.......................................

6.5x55 was introduced as Swedens Military cartridge in 1894. The cartridge and rifle to chamber it was a joint development between Sweden and Mauser, The first Swedish Mausers were produced in the Swedebau at Obendorf, Wurtenberg in Germany.

Built numerous 6.5x47's (tight neck and standard)
Hi Andy,

Whats the diffrence and advantages/disadvantages between tight neck V's Standard?

I have ditched the .243 AI in favour of 6.5x47 for my re-barrel project. Sent off the variation yesterday.

Thanks,

Miles

PS. What Small primers would you recommend?

Thanks,

Miles

I have found neck turning to uniform the brass gives better accuracy even in afactory rifle

You won't see any benefit with a tight neck in a hunting rifle at normal stalking distances. The 6.5x47 works very well with standard or even .292 no-turn necks. The CCI 450 small rifle magnum primer is the one to use.
