Just got home from work there the now to find the best practice guide waiting on me. Had a quick look through it and its a great folder packed full of information!!! Amazing quality and for £15 it must be one of the best buys out there for novice and seasoned stalker alike. Just going to have a good look through it just now but after a quick glance I'm thoroughly impressed, don't know why I didn't get this before:)

Is this hard copy of the guides that you can download? how do I order a copy?

Cheers,

Martin

BDS sell it? Not sure of position South of the Border, but ( for the moment ) SNH administer in Scotland and google Deer Best Practise will take you to the webpage. They are on line or you can subscribe and receive a binder of information that in most other industries would be £300+. So arguable points - when has it ever been other  - but generally very useful and easy reading.

It's a great resource and I would urge people to see the thread on here regards changes to the system and in particular Mike's role.

We've put letters into SNH and our SMP - and responded to the stock replies given! ;)

the poster lives in Southampton, why would he want the Scottish version? More likely he would want the English version although his stalking may only be in Scotland.

As far as I am aware there is two "best practice guides". SNH produces one in Scotland and the Deer Initiative does one for down here. I have the deer initiative versiin and it is a useful reference.

That's my understanding also. One difference is that the Scottish version offers a subscription service, whereby you get updates when available. Unfortunately the DI version (available from BDS) doesn't offer this.

Sent off for my SNH (scottish) copy this morning.

Had it provided updates as and when like the SNH one, I would have sent off for a deer initiative one as well.

Hats off to whomever did the website too - I havn't see such a slick well put together website for along time and for something field sport related completely unheard of.
Very impressed

The Scottish version is the original (and best). The English version is mostly copied, with little tailoring of much relevance to England/Wales.

I understand it costs SNH about £45 to print every copy.

Don't hold your breath for any automatic updates from SNH. I've been subscribed for three years, and my partner 2 years, and there has not been any update from them. Neither has there been any update on the website, from which all the material may be freely downloaded in .pdf form, if you want to keep it on your ipad etc. But please, order the hardcopy too, it is over-lavishly printed on glossy waterproof-laminated pages in an A4 ring binder. Completely OTT but nice to own.

It is a superb publication, every stalker should own a copy, before the demise of Best Practise means it may become unobtainable in future.

Absolutely right!

Trying not to tub thump ( and no that's no hitting myself before you pile in! ) but if you havent done so - please write to your MSP and SNH regards changes that are going through at Best Practise ( see other threads ) - pragmatically may make little difference now, but if something this good can be derailed without consultation or apparent thought - what next?

Andy is correct Best Practice is being slowed down with not clear direction at all (IF IT HAS ONE)Please contact your MSP or write direct to the mister of the environment. I have ordered 25 for the CAD in east kilbride any one on that day will be able to get a copy and any up dates in the future for as little as £10.
If any one wants a copy don't go to the monkey go straight to the organ grinder.
Mike Cottam.
Direct Contact is 01463725373 Leave a message he will get back to you.

They (SNH) are moving more towards Beavers and geese and while i know they need addressed. Deer and correctly supplied venison are so important economically to scotland we cannot let the BEST practice initiative just fade away. Or we could all forget best practice and eat old hoarse. lol

What he just said :thumb:

My reply from SNH, they admitted it was a hugely successful scheme and feedback had been very positive - so naturally I have gone back to ask 'why downgrade it then'?

My MSP is Richard Lochhead - and appreciate he's a bit busy with arranging the next war with Iceland ;) - but he has responded positively and is taking it up with the Minister. That's likely the same Minister will review competency in April 2014, so downgrading of Best Practice does seem a bit at odds with the drive for higher standards. :suss:
