After 20 years with the 22 rimfire its time to up grade so the 17 hmr is on the cards. But are there any 17 hybrids that may be a better choice . It will be mainly used on long range rabbits and the ood fox cheers guys

Up grade????

Not sure that that's the best way to describe moving from .22LR to .17HMR :stir:

add a 17 but i wouldnt replace 22 for 17. i did a few years ago and i recently got another 22 as its better for lamping rabbits in my opinion. both have their place.

I own am 17 HMR and I'd not inflict it on my worst enemy. The ammo is 'king awful and inconsistent: I've measured most brands.

Rule no 1 always have a .22 lr in your armoury no matter what..17S if you can/want 2 reload get a 17 rem never look back....

I bought my .17 hmr cz 452 American last month, despite some people arguing that it has problems and is unreliable. I am so glad I did not listen to them. I have put around 100 rounds through it, no problems whatsoever. I am very impressed. Extremely accurate (150 yards) and a joy to shoot. Oh, and the trigger, unlike other people's experience is great. I will not be going for a trigger kit. I do not need one!

I have fired lots of rounds through my HMR and never had a problem either. But then I don't use Hornady where it appears the problems have come from. I use Federal. I would ignore the HMR bashers on here and get one if I were you. It's not even similar to a .22 as it's accurate to double the range. Additionally there are lots of bargains about at the moment so go for it. Mines an Anni but my previous CZ was much better value for money and supper accurate. That would be my choice. However, don't get rid of the .22. It will still come in handy some time

+1

Save your money, stick with your 22. Or go for a 17 which will gather dust after a couple of months.

Fair point
but when that number has a one or two zeros after it and you have had one or more nights cut short with a bullet stuck in the barrel (or worse)
or you can't get ammo that doesn't split the cases and the groups start opening up as result of the inconsistencies you will know why there are quite a few up for sale

I have had a few 17 hmr's and i have had few issues with them at all.

they do what they do and thats that, it will never be as good as a 17 cf rifle all day long but if thats what you want ? try one, some people get upset about what shoots claim it can do etc,

its down to reading so many stories about 300 yard head shots, and its got enough power to drop a efalump. etc etc etc.

there is issues with some ammo but thinking on how many thay knock out the factory its no wonder.

the most upsetting thing about the calibre is all the CR@P thats said about it.

Mine is going as i need to sell it and thats it, if i could keep it i would as i love the calibre and with all its faults its still better than ant remmington 700 rifle ever made.

best of luck in the search and i hope you enjoy it.

Kind regards

bob.

ps: its far safer than any 22 rim fire you care to mention

I've had an Anschutz 17/17 HMR for some years and never once had a problem with it. Ideal for lamping rabbits at night as out to 100 yds there is no need to aim off, bit noisier than a 22 but it never really seems to have made a difference.
This particular model is sadly no longer available but any Anshutz/CZ/Weirauch 17 should do the job. As has been said, a lot of criticism has been thrown at this calibre but after many thousands of rounds I wouldn't part with mine at any price. I still have the 22 but use the 17 more and more.

you always hear the bad cases rather than the people who have no problems, mine has been pretty good over the last 6 years or so I have had it. Its not a centerfire but if you use it alongside the .22lr then its easy to enjoy its plus points. Ammo wise i had a half used box of hornadys that I left in the cabinet 5 years that did have a couple of slow burning rounds but I just used them on paper in the end to get rid and no issues since.
