Leupold Vx6 2-12x42

I have a friend who is going to the states, so Im thinking about getting him to bring me home a Leupold vx6 2-12x42i scope. Anyone got one? I dont know if the x42 objective will me good for low light? I have never looked at a Leupold so dont know anything about sharpness, clarity and so on.

30mm tube, illumination and #4 reticle sounds good, when you dont wanna spend the money for a 2-12x50z6iSwaro.

I have had a VX1 VX2 and VX3
at US money they are a no-brainer
The glass is clear, the reticules are great, build quality is very good

the eye relief on high mag variables can be fussy and is not everyones cup of tea but you quickly get used to it.

would have loved an illuminated one
 
a wee zeiss diatal 4x32 is more than anyone needs for up to 200yds and stalking up to 1hr after sunset.

rather have that then a cheaper x56 any day.
 
It might make a difference of about 1-3 minutes to your shooting time from the EU scopes. The question is would you spend 3 times more for 3 minutes extra time when you will be then gralocking in the dark?!!!!!

As you wont have to pay postage or import charges why not get a ziess conquest? They are as good as the diatal, some even a bit cheaper than the leupy's!

Your post assumes low light only occurs at the start and end of the day. You should take an inferior scope into woodland and see what your thoughts are then. And an illuminated ret will only help you shoot the wrong deer in this situation. Deer change position and move and you need quality ( european) glass to see what you are shooting even after you have assesed it through your binoculars. And thats a fact!

I mention dusk and dawn as that usually is the times you find low light!
I also have scopes made by different makers all second hand apart from the ziess conquest which I bought new.

Makes of scopes I have had and use. Range from S&B,Swaro,American Ziess(conquest). And two Niko's

Are you really the only person that stalks deer in the woods Gary?

The ability of a scope to transmit light is not down to its obj diameter. More over it is a function of the mechanical constraints contained within it's inner workings. Oh, and the quality of the coatings on the inside of the lenses!

Now argue all you like I really don't care!

Inability to distinguish between a scopes actual mechanical capabilities and it's physical attributes. Then blindly argue a piont based on marketing and personal pride in the scope you have chosen. Is unhelpful to the OP.

The OP asked if a leupy 42mm obj was going to hinder him overly.

No matter where you find your low light.
The answer will be, no not much.

I use a 10x42 schmidt, if a client/ guest turned up with a leupold i would suggest they used my rifle/scope to improve their chances. If you are under no pressure to get results, either to complete a cull target, or to get trophies, a leupold is fine. Simple fact, a quality european scope will work better in our ambient light conditions.

I hope you ask them what equipment they are bringing before they turn up then Gary!

If you insisted on my using your kit based on the fact I had scope you would not personaly chose. And not on my ability to stalk. I would ask for my money back there and then.

Making assumptions about a persons stalking ability due to the equipment they own. Well!!!!!!

So this doesn't turn into a pi$$ing contest.
I have a had a second hand 6x42 S&B. Great scope. I actuly got it off my neighbour. He let me have it for less than a brand new Niko.(as a favour).
When I get the blaser I'm looking at I want to put a 10x42 S&B on it!
If ever end up stalking with you Gary. I trust that combo will meat your requirements!

either of those scopes will give you a good chance, the rest is up to you!

If you turned up with a leupold i would offer you the use of my equipment, and suggest your chances would be better if you took me up on the offer. If you turned up with a niko id ask if the rifle was a .177 or a .22
 
Back to the op's question, im sure the leupold will get you many deer, and when you decide to upgrade, you will sell it without too much loss.
 
As someone who shoots 80% of his deer in woodland, I find no difference between my Leopold or swaro, as shooting in woodland the distance is shorter and a 6x42 is all that is required, on one rifle i only have a 4x32 and use to use a, e o tec in the woods. As to improving there chances I have never read such cxxp, do you rezero for them. As to being under pressure to get results , trophies ,cull targets etc, that has nothing to do with scopes it's about the ability to hunt. As we say you can teach a horse to gallop but try teaching him to walk first.
