New UK roe record

I see there is mention in this week's shooting times of the new record. What a whopper! To my eyes it almost looks like a 'full-sized baille head, if that makes sense?

A couple of interesting points to take from the article, namely has anyone had an dealings with the collector who bought it and what are people's thoughts on the suggestion that then bloke who shot it was intending to chuck it as nothing special? Do they grow so big up there that he genuinely thought it run of the mill or are there people involved in stalking who aren't obsessed with antlers :-P

Anyone know anything more re the circumstances it was taken under? My guess would be it came off ground supporting a commercial pheasant shoot?

Probably thought the same as me it was Pig Ugly ! And he cut it with a chainsaw by the looks of things .

If the fella that bought it is Drew Bain then hes got a wealth of knowledge aboot deer, and doesn't mind spending time chatting to us peasant recreational stalkers which is no bad thing. All heads are different and imo just because they are different doesn't make them ugly.

But to be fair its not the best looking head ive ever seen. Its very short but got lots of mass with it.

Not my idea of a bonny head..but...each to their own ! .... beauty is in the eye of the beholder ?
Would love to know what the fella paid for it ?

I believe that I saw this head being measured first thing on Saturday morning at the Game fair by Tony Dalby-Welsh. Not my cup of tea I have to admit. Indeed there was a much smarter head handed in for measuring (by a Forum member) that made Gold and this head was far far prettier in my opinion. But as said beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Yes, there are lots of people in stalking, including me, who are not obsessed with antlers.
They are interested in stalking for venison meat, conservation and crop protection.

Regardless of anyone's thoughts or interest in trophies, to consider chucking it out as nothing special is a bit selfish, if not disrespectful. If you don't want antlers, you can always donate them to people such as the BDS who are always after antlers to sell (for artists, walking sticks, dog chews, etc., etc.) at shows to raise much needed funds

I agree there are some lovely well balanced 6 pointers which do not score anyway near these abnomal looking heads. I have a big bronze roe head which RP measued and he remarked that it was a very pretty head which it is, just what you expect.

I am suprised a well know chef didn't buy (or shoot it)

Me!
That is the ugliest head I have seen in a long time
never been overly fussed about antlers

the biggest stag I have ever seen and shot had a mediocre head at best.
I shot a royal once, very poor body condition. reason for shooting was the latter not the former

This is the trouble with a great many huge trophy heads, they become abnormally large and heavy to the point where they loose the shape and form that we all expect of the species. One only has to look at some of the huge Red Deer heads taken where they have a mass of crowned points on the top of the antler, they end up looking like a upturned tree root.

The same can go for Roe, although the head in question is not an overly attractive head it is non the less a very heavy head with massive pearling. It is quite remarkable how Roe can achieve such a massive heavy head, and for someone to take this animal and think it is just a throw away  say's a lot about their experience as a stalker to me

I love it..you can shoot uniform 6 pointers all day long,,,finding something 'special' is what will bring back memories when you are standing in the library with a whisky 30 yrs from now, looking up at your trophy wall...all those 'normal' bucks, you won't remember where came from nor the day they were shot.

personally, that's what I like about 'abnormal' heads...

I agree with some of the comments above. I love heads like this as it never ceases to amaze me how a relatively small animal like a roebuck can grow that amount of bone during the leanest time of the year.

While I also like to see a nice even 6 pointer, the real jumbo heads that turn up are great to see, if only because they are different to the norm (in the way all malforms are).

As for my tounge in cheek comments re antlers, perhaps those who only shoot for crop protection or venison will letc me come and shoot all their big boys as they apparently won't miss them ;-)

Sorry guys, just a shameless plug, this picture was taken by me and posted on the CIC Trophy Measuring Facebook page at the CLA. Those of you are on FB should be able to see pictures and news like this first on our page. Search for CIC Trophy Measuring

i wondered how long it would take before the pic turned up on the SD.

I believe next weeks Shooting Times will feature some more regarding CIC trophies at the fair.

CHRISEOE. Is there a chance we can see the full score sheet . Also if it had been measured by the Boone and Crocket SCI systems etc would it have still made gold.
