Hilux cam belt change (sorry Norma you prompted me!)

My Hilux MK6 is a 2.5 diesel 2006, its done 70k and has been serviced annually.
The book states cam belt should be changed at 100k or 10 years.
Has anyone else risked taking it to the limit?
I am getting a little jittery to say the least.

No probs Richard better safe than sorry eh my l200 was done at 56k and nows done 105k and at 11 yrs old not worth much but she's a good truck for the sake of a few hundred quid I'm getting it done while I have the cash .

GET IT DONE!!!!!!!!

I could go into the reasons why but the noise from my wallet screaming in pain would just drown it out

I'm pretty sure the timing belt on a hilux only drives the pump, so if it breaks the engine won't be damaged.
make sure you change the hydraulic tensioner too
 
My Hi ace has the same engine as the hi lux it is just coming up to 150.000 miles.if you look after it they are good for 200.00 miles .

Sold my hi ace with 280,000 on the clock to a friend , four years later it has done 370,000 and he has stuck to the regime of timing belt change every 70,000 and service every 5,000.

its an interference engine. Belt breaks you fubar the valves!
change it, no that tricky on any car if you have a few tools and the Internet, with investing in OEM parts and doing the usual selection of ancillary parts at the same time
thermostat, water pump, aux belts etc etc. they cost pennies compared to the ball ache of pulling the car apart
 
Totally different situation but my 86 "Hilux" (Toyota 4x4 Pickup, here) with a gas engine is waiting on warm weather for the timing chain guides to be replaced. The originals were plastic and one has broken off. The non OEM guides are steel, like they used to be before 1984. This is one time when OEM (plastic) is not the way to go.~Muir
 
Devon deer stalker I'll get it done mate, my hilux is sitting on 76k now and I'm booking it in for a belt change and a service. I'll do a service every 6k on my truck.
 
I have the MK6 2.5 D4D and thought they were due at 70K? Service every 10K?
I'll be having mine done at 70K I also change the oil & filter mid service so that gets done every 5K.

In SA the 2.5 d4d Hilux srx i think its similar then yours! Both mine has 150 000km on the clock and had to be done. I had a look on the belt condition and i could have done at least another 20 000km on them.


Another fact!!! TOYOTA DOESN'T BREAK!!!

Yes really.... the cam is gear driven and the pump is driven by a belt off the cam. That's why the replacement interval is so long (150K) it hardly requires any effort to drive the pump. If the cam was belt driven it would need replacing at 70 - 80K
Everything else is driven by the auxilliary belts. Water pump, power steering, alternator and air con, so like I said if the timing belt breaks the engine will stop running but it's an easy fix.... a new belt and tensioner and you're back up and running, it takes about an hour and a half to do the job.

I'm not saying don't replace it, just that it's not the end of the world if it does go.

My hilux is a mk5 03 model and the cam belt light came on at 90k, I didn't do the job myself but was told by my local trusted mechanic mate that it is quite straightforward. Think it cost a couple of hundred quid. Great vehicle so far, 115k so far and apart from wear parts and servicing it has cost me very little in "spannering"
 
I have an 2004 d4d Mk 5 and had this belt changed at 90000 with the light on, cost less than £100.and only 1.5 hours smile its a Toyota. (Chain driven valves)

Edit this post Sorry Richard I was wrong it does drive the cam but did only cost £100 woodfordfallow

The belt on the Hilux drives the camshaft and if it breaks will cause valve damage. We look after a fleet of 40 of these and allways do the belts at 80000 as we have had a couple break and the repair cost is then horrendous. The upside is that a belt change only takes just over an hour so will not be over costly. I would advise that you use original parts as if there is then a failure the warranty for any repairs will be picked up by Toyota
 
it makes no difference what parts you use on a toyota hilux once it reaches 60,000 miles as its then out of warranty
i have a new hilux every 3 years and i am due one in april but this one i will take out an extended warranty as i have had slight problems in the past after the 60,000 mark and toyota wouldn't pick up the cost

If you use toyota genuine parts for a repair and they fail within the following 12 months you can claim parts warranty from Toyota. I have done this several times with various manufacturers here at work. Which is one of the reasons we allways use genuine parts.
 
maybe so but you have had to pay for the repair in the first place if its over 60,000
 
Better than paying for the repair and using cheap parts then when they fail having to pay for it all again as the parts warranty also covers the labour for the vehicle to be repired again if they fail
