Hilux cam belt change (sorry Norma you prompted me!)

Yes really.... the cam is gear driven and the pump is driven by a belt off the cam.

so like I said if the timing belt breaks the engine will stop running but it's an easy fix.... a new belt and tensioner and you're back up and running, it takes about an hour and a half to do the job.

Gear driven Cam?
That picture shows a standard timing belt configuration between Flywheel Pulley (FP) and the Camshaft pulley (CA), with a standard belt tensioner arrangement (T)
The diagram also shows the ridged aux pulley (bottom left marked "2") that the pumps etc are run off.
Very few vehicles have anything additional running off the timing belt...in fact I am struggling to think of one

The only time a snapped timing belt won't result in valve damage is on a "non interference engine" where a full lift valve measurement is less than the combustion chamber height when a piston is at Top Dead Centre (TDC)

I may be way off the mark (pretty sure I am not) but 5 minutes on google shows several shagged 2.5d engines with valve damage from snapped timing belts

Service interval is a component of better materials and engineering rather than design.

Its not a massive job as if I recall the front panel does not need to be removed
certainly on the 3.0 that my brother in law has the timing belt was done for a few hundred quid if I remember rightly

not worth running the gauntlet of valve damage for the cost of a belt
replace it

timing belts are not covered under warranty AFAIK
BUT...if you use a dealer to replace it and it fails and causing catastrophic valve/engine damage you have recourse to pursue them for the repair

FP stands for fuel pump, not flywheel pulley

The cam is definatley gear driven on D4D engines and also the earlier engines right back to the early 90's

The 2.5d avensis has a belt driven cam.... maybe the google pics are of that engine

Better than paying for the repair and using cheap parts then when they fail having to pay for it all again as the parts warranty also covers the labour for the vehicle to be repired again if they fail
i didn't know that , whenever mine has been serviced and repaired its always done at the toyota dealer i buy them from so i guess I'm covered , just wish toyota would extend the warranty period like some of the other 4x4 makers have

Yes really.... the cam is gear driven and the pump is driven by a belt off the cam. That's why the replacement interval is so long (150K) it hardly requires any effort to drive the pump. If the cam was belt driven it would need replacing at 70 - 80K
Everything else is driven by the auxilliary belts. Water pump, power steering, alternator and air con, so like I said if the timing belt breaks the engine will stop running but it's an easy fix.... a new belt and tensioner and you're back up and running, it takes about an hour and a half to do the job.

I'm not saying don't replace it, just that it's not the end of the world if it does go.

So to simplify this model does not have a cam belt , just a injector pump belt.

Correct... but the confusion lies in the fact that the pump is driven by a belt which gets it's drive from the front cam sprocket, giving the impression that the cam is belt driven when it's not.

Simples really then...so long as you understand mechanics.
