Yes really.... the cam is gear driven and the pump is driven by a belt off the cam.
so like I said if the timing belt breaks the engine will stop running but it's an easy fix.... a new belt and tensioner and you're back up and running, it takes about an hour and a half to do the job.
Gear driven Cam?
That picture shows a standard timing belt configuration between Flywheel Pulley (FP) and the Camshaft pulley (CA), with a standard belt tensioner arrangement (T)
The diagram also shows the ridged aux pulley (bottom left marked "2") that the pumps etc are run off.
Very few vehicles have anything additional running off the timing belt...in fact I am struggling to think of one
The only time a snapped timing belt won't result in valve damage is on a "non interference engine" where a full lift valve measurement is less than the combustion chamber height when a piston is at Top Dead Centre (TDC)
I may be way off the mark (pretty sure I am not) but 5 minutes on google shows several shagged 2.5d engines with valve damage from snapped timing belts
Service interval is a component of better materials and engineering rather than design.
Its not a massive job as if I recall the front panel does not need to be removed
certainly on the 3.0 that my brother in law has the timing belt was done for a few hundred quid if I remember rightly
not worth running the gauntlet of valve damage for the cost of a belt
replace it
timing belts are not covered under warranty AFAIK
BUT...if you use a dealer to replace it and it fails and causing catastrophic valve/engine damage you have recourse to pursue them for the repair
