The black dot of doom fun shoot - anyone game?

Ive not used my 7-08 in about a year (due to having a death-laser now, also known as a 6.5x284). Anyways, i have decided to get it out and use up some 140gn SGKs ive got for it. Nothing fancy, just testing powder weight, prone off the bipod. forgot how well this rifle shoots. 5 round group.

So that was 5 shots straight out the cabinet after a year without messing or testing 1st!! Although it wasn't the dot of doom or in stalking conditions that's pretty impressive none the less!!

Be interesting to see the result of the 3 shots at the dot off a set of sticks at 100 yards though.

I'm gonna give it a go tmoro after work with a couple of mine so will post the results,

Yep. The rifle shoots it's nuts off. It used to perform very similar regularly with 140gn VLDs so I loaded exactly the same recipe but used 140 SGKs opposed to 140 VLDs. Seems that load works too! I then shot another 5 groups with varying charge weights, none quite as good but all in the 0.6's or less.

I will get the sticks out and the death ray and have a go on the proper dot to make it fair..

Yes I have to agree that is a fantastic group, regardless of its eligibility.

Here is my effort:

As predicted not as good as last year but still OK I hope.

Weather conditions were not great, I had an 8-10mph crosswind and the fact that the rifle is zeroed at 200 yards to allow for, the shot that missed the target was the first one when I didn't aim low enough, I corrected it for the second two. All shot prone off a bipod, the rifle was clean and had just been taken out of the cabinet.

You didn't use the Black Dot of Doom though, so it won't count.

I got left out last year for the same reason.

Will have another go soon but don't think it will be as good as last years

That centre ring/spot is an inch in Diameter (actually it is just over 15/16" to be precise!)

I cut out 5 identical centre spots and stuck them on one target
matters not what the centre spot looks like to me

I think it is impressive, in as far as I can remember it is the only 3 shot group ever to hit the black dot twice. I think there was one 5 shot group last time with 2 in the black but that's not quite the same thing.

Is .222 allowed? Only one I can use during the week near home. Will have to be at night under the lamp, so who knows what it'll look like (get the excuses in early...).

Guessing .222 will be fine, it's ok for roe in Scotland and munty/CWD in England. Might make it a bit more challenging for yourself doing it in the dark though!

Ok - here we go.

.222, 55gr Sako soft points. Out of a Tikka T3, off a bipod. Ase Utra Northstar moderator. At night, under a scope mounted lamp. Scope was 3-9 X 50 Leupold, set at maximum magnification (and even then could barely see the dot). Sighted for 1.5 inches high at 100m. This target was at 100m (+/- 10 given the error in my pacing). Variable side wind of around 8 mph, from the right. Two groups of three fired - could not see where the shots were hitting, so fired one group, inspected, went for a wander, came back and shot a second group.

First group. Rifle straight from cabinet. Had fired one shot since last major clean (at a fox at the weekend). Think I judged the drop perfectly, but did not account for the wind at all.

Second group. Rifle had fired the first group, plus two more shots at bunnies. Still not quite getting the wind right, and perhaps a touch heavy with the drop. Pleased with the grouping though!

Those are good groups but that black dot is really hard to hit - remember last time we had 53 rounds fired and only 7 hits.

This time we are at 4 hits for 23 rounds fired so just about on track for a similar result. (Last time around I only counted "good" hits on the dot, say over half the bullet in the black, on the basis that it takes a good hit to kill a deer so if you don't mind I'm only counting 1 hit on your 2nd target. I know breaking the line counts in target shooting but it might not always break the neck in deer)

For what it is worth when I did it last time I shot a group prone that was pretty dire and then, because some others were shooting off sticks, shot a group off sticks which wasn't quite so bad. So even though the sticks should have been less stable I think the little bit of practice with the first group was what made the difference as most of us aren't used to shooting at a black dot floating in space.

It isn't easy, but that's what makes it fun.

I'm planning on getting out on Friday afternoon to give this a go - along with my nephew who is a currently serving (Light Infantry) soldier, so that will definitely put the pressure on!

Isn't it just!

I will admit to cheating ever so slightly - I was out last week, and took a couple shots at a golf ball (they are irresistible when you're out on a golf course and haven't seen anything). So I had recent experience of where my shots were going in relation to a 1" blob.

so if you don't mind I'm only counting 1 hit on your 2nd target.

No - I anticipated that. If only I'd aimed just a touch higher on the second group!

I'll try to get out at the weekend with the .243 and .308. Things are only likely to go downhill...

Right here was my attempt. Firs step was pace out 100m and set the target up. First up was the HMR looking through a Hawke Sport HD 3-12x56 lying prone with bipod. It is zeroed at 100m (laser ranged) but due to the less than quality optics I couldn't see where the rounds had gone so just aimed all 3 at the centre of the dot and all missed.

Next up was my Tikka T3 .243 prone off bipod with Leupold M8 fixed 10x (nice fine crosshair). Not the worst group in the world but not the best either. With this I could see the first shot so tried to move my POA and ended up chasing the next two round the dot.
Finallywas the Tikka again but off sticks kneeling. The first was dead on which was surprising after the previous group, the second was a bad snatch on my behalf and the third was low.

All in all not the worst but shows more practice is required to tighten the groups up and re zero the HMR. All these were shot with the spirit of the competition ie no check zero before, using what I'd use in the field etc

This looks like a blast and great idea, am going away on a trip for a week and won't get the chance until later next week will try the .308 @100 of sticks that should be interesting...lol..that one inch dot will be mighty tough me thinks watch this space....

All in all not the worst

Far from worst at all and I'd guess in terms of stats you are doing just about the same as everyone else, maybe even a little better plus doing something different like this is always a learning experience and a bit of fun. I'm pretty sure the black dot moves about when you're trying to hit it.

Don't feel pressured! a good friend is a royal marines commando, 3 tours of afganistan and I took him out to have a shot of my 30-06 and 243 and his grouping was abysmal! lol....as he says the requirement for them was to hit a torso sized knock down target...not shoot a tight group lol...

I still wind him up for being the most "undeadly" commando out there and if you want to be safe just stand infront of them..lol.
