when will it end

With all the vegetation getting higher and the crops growing in the fields it's getting more difficult to see them now so earlier this year I decided on a new strategy, time consuming but it is paying off.

i have,as have a lot of us,baited areas before and waited. This year I put trail cameras out on the bait spots to see when the foxes came. Suprisingly they always turned up at the same time, give or take half an hour, creatures of habit I suppose.

I have been testing this rather smart piece of kit. Foxes are clearly identifiable out at 300 yds. The eyes glow tremendously.next thing will be to put an anti glare screen on the back screen as it does light up my face a bit much I think.

In certain parts of the country there are plenty in others they are becoming quite scarce they could end up the way of the Dodo there are a lot of people shooting them compared to the 70s and half of them shooting them have no idea why they are doing it

We have a duty of care to all the wildlife, to control numbers, not wantonly destroy for pleasure.

Nice spotter build - your own or is someone making it on a semi commercial basis?
This is the MK2 prototype, just a larger battery inside to give a run time of 3-4 hours. It may be made on a semi commercial basis if the fellow decides. I will keep all interested informed. No price set but £250-300 has been bandied about. Great value I think relative to what is on the market. The vision quality is excellent.

i might add that 300 yds is the furthest away I have spotted a fox. It may be possible to see them further and should be I think.

There could possibly be other factors involved. There has been a vast increase in the numbers of people shooting foxes, also as the numbers of cars increase there will inevitably be more road kills. Foxes only breed once a year unlike rabbits and I would guess the numbers of cubs reaching maturity will be quite small. So with more and more being killed numbers in some areas will inevitably drop.

Half way through the year and not even seen a fox. last one I shot 17/12/13. Been out at all hours lamp, night vision, stink bait & calling = big fat zero.
Good job the bucks are coming easier or I'd be thinking of taking a time out.

you have shot them all ,well done , theres a block of land were we cant shoot foxes about 5000 acres and there every where , and loards of cubs nocking around so maybe you have hit them harder than you think or they are just comming in the day light ,that not so uncommon ,even more so if you have been scaring them by shooting at them

At last grass being cut, sat out on a 20 acre field last night, fox appeared at 10:05 was sorted by 10:10 145 yds, dry vixen, then at 10:20 located one with thermal opposite side of feild but on foot stalk failed due to wind shift. We saw another on another field later on. Huge ammount of grass being cut at present and saw several foxs from the train yesterday. Saw a doe with twins this am again from the train, never seen any close up whilst shooting though.

Will be out tonight and Friday so bag might increase.

Yes, the world around here is humming with the sound of mowers and silage foragers at the moment. I shot a large dog fox (number 95 of the year to date) last night on some freshly-mown hay, and we saw another off in the distance. Like you, we also suffered from wind shift. It was nice to see that there were two red hinds in one uncut field, and another grazing on its own over the hedge. I would imagine that they've got calves close by. Elsewhere cubs are causing problems on the chicken farms, so I'm guessing it'll be a busy few weeks for us!

Gone manic I should be nocternal at present. We shot another 4 last night saw 8 two of which we couldn't shoot otherwise they would have gone.

Hardly a blade of grass standing at present. Heard that one farm chopped 3 roe kids which is sad.

Mega difficult to see foxs in the big swathes of grass but conversly you can get close to charlie but 100 grn soft point out of a 25.06 at 30 yds is a little overkill.

Thermal is just brilliant, last night tucked up in a dark corner looking down a long cut field mate gave a couple of squeaks. Next I see a roe tight in the hedge about 100yds away. I passed him the thermal and I watched through the bins (Leicas) and remarkable to have a roe doe charge up to us, nearly flattened us, so close i could hear her running and I am pretty deaf. She came so fast could not keep up with the bins focus.

Next field we spotted a fox at 250 + yds and watched it slowly hunt up the field next to the railway, got to 100 yds and was terminated with aid of a small LED torch.
Out again tonight but with .223 and decent optics (see my post on top end optics) see what we can get, with luck grass will be spread so not so difficult.

been having one of my worst years ever on the foxes this year basicaly just not seeing them at all, i couldnt even take you to see a litter of cubs at the moment and i havnt even seen a cub yet, ive had a run of about 6 lamping sessions with out even pulling the trigger but the ones i have seen throughout the year and shot at i might just have thrown the rifle at. I usually work on a 95-100% accuracy rate on foxes, by not taking any chances with stupid shots and keeping distances down below 200yrds for the the most part in fact as close as i think they will come as im shooting foxes for keepers and dont to make there jobs any harder than it has to be, but this year im struggling to keep ratio above 80% not helped by a stupid miss last night (about 180yrds but off a bipod caused by me snatching the trigger) which if im honest just felt imbarassing by. I know what my answer is just keep going forget the missis and just concentrate on the next shot and maybe bust a few crows at range in the mean time but im just wondering what you lads do when all else seems to fail around you
Sounds to me like you have being doing a good job over the years sir ! You keep hammering them and there will be less, ive only shot 3 so far this year which is how i want it ! Should pick up when harvest starts though.

They have all gone urban to avoid mass extinction, counted 15 in Southampton the other night..they are not stupid! All the food they need and no one shooting at them...no fox brainer!
