do you make mods? If so how much?
If you noticed a DB or 2 difference I would be very very surprised, one thing you wont silence is the super sonic crack of the bullet as im sure people are aware of. Ive done a fair bit of testing with moderators on all sorts of calibres and one thing I have learnt is the standard mark 1 ear wont notice the difference.
the troble bieng is a have a t8 and a northstar but am looking to get a new rifle and both my moderators are 1/2 threads.a lot of the rifles are now 14mm which means i either buy a new moderator or have to choose my rifle by what thread it comes with
Buy a mod that has a changable threaded bush and replacement baffle stack that way you get the best of both!
Hmmm I do believe that the Wildcat Predator is made like thatas are the Hushers which no one seems to mention and the Husher has no baffle stack to worry about neither
plus being a modular design
however they are a muzzle can and not the reflex type
.
Hmmm what about the Mk2 ear.
Now as your obviously aware the sound of the bullet is heard but the quarry hear it as it pases or gets close but due to the "Cone of Confusion" caused by the sound moderator quietening the muzzle report and diffusing it means that the quarry does not know where the actual shot came from. I recall a lecture given at the Imperial War Museum by Andrew Hamlet on sound moderators their use and how effective they are.
I made my own moderators and muzzle brakes some 30 odd years ago when playing with a Crossman 766 air rifle.
I have a Wildcat and because I'm lazy and can't be bothered changing it every time, I fire my .223 through the .308 baffle. It IS louder than when I use the correct baffle but not loud enough to affect your hearing which is what it's all about really.
If the deer are going to run it doesn't matter whether it's a moderated shot or not.

The quarry will not know if it was a 30 cal mod being used on a 222, 243, 6,5 etc etc. The point is there is very little advantage from using "calibre" specific moderators.
The lecture sounded intersting.
