The black dot of doom fun shoot - anyone game?

So here's mine with the new rifle firsts outing to day.

Can I count the first 3 and exclude your 4th on the basis that everyone else just shot 3? I know it's a bit unfair, especially with a new rifle, but the point was to see how many times out of 3 shots we could hit the dot.

If I count it that way when, so far, we are looking at 24 good hits for 74 shots fired.

yes feller some times small holes on top of each other :norty: still awaiting load development with 130 hpbt hunting bullets but thats for another day ,but if it can deliver this from a factory can't wait for the perfected ammo to be sorted out. View attachment 39872 ? 123 AMAX shot at 150 yrds sub 1" just a load of the internet !! would't wish it chasing me down the street

I know ! the 47 is a great round , I keep loosing to it at a competition I get involved in on UKV but i'm going to persevere with my old 308 ! managed a 4th last time?

why yes you can its a 4 round mag and i just got to use em all up  no worries miss read the first thought that was just a point of aim, can i do it again and try harder this time
and give the scope two clicks up no wind tomorrow !! or use the 1" 150 yrd target that only has three holes !!!!
:coat:

Only just got round to this, what with lambing and everything.
Not had a chance with the .243 yet, but took the .22LR out for an airing this evening. First time out of the cabinet since the autumn, so very pleased with this group. Sorry, took 5 shots instead of the required 3. Force of habit I suppose, plinking with a 5 shot magazine.
Also, only a rather paltry 50 yards effort. I'm afraid the result wasn't so jolly when I pushed it out to 80 yards , but there was a strong cross wind.

Should just add, it was prone off bipod.

Thought I'd have another bash at this to see how the .308 and .243 react after just a pull through with the boresnake.

In highseat with a blustery wind around 15mph from left to right gusting to about 20+ occasionally.

.308 1st shot was way right then I over corrected with the next two trying to allow for the wind!

Thought I'd try again and a better result realising the .308 is not as affected by the wind as I thought. I'm still getting used to this calibre and learning all the time, although a bit more range time needed me thinks!!

Onto the .243 and the 1st shot after the clean was also high right but not as bad. Next one not enough allowed for wind and finally last one on the money!! :D

Again had a 2nd go for fun and although the group was ok (the 2nd shot was pilot error!!) I missed the dot! Altogether not too bad and next time I use a pull through I'll pick a calm day to check the 1st shots to see if they are consistent!

I know you were not trying for groups and were compensating for wind…I find that it is me being buffeted on discharge that does more damage than the effect of the wind on the bullet over the flight…that would only be around 1" for 15mph over 100yards for your 165s. I had real problems with loose groups and over-compensation, even when I was calling the shots as being good, until I finally found something that my rifle liked.

Have you tried many other makes of ammunition through either gun?

I kept reading things like my ".308 will shoot anything" and it did not help my confidence one bit!

I did not know if it was my technique, the rifle or the ammunition. I finally got a friend out to shoot my rifle in order to take me out the equation. His groups were better than mine :( but crucially also showed the same difference between makes of ammo :) . What I mean is that we both achieved much better groups with Sako 150 SP than with the Hornady 150 SST Superperformance. I then discovered that what the rifle really liked best were the 165 Hornady SST Superperformance, closely followed by the Hornady 150 GMX Superperfomance.

Gratifyingly, once I had removed my uncertainty about the rifle and ammunition my technique has started to improve….

It will be interesting to see what you find with your "first shot constancy" experiments…I note that somebody else is going to do similar in one of the reloading threads.

Hi Alan,
I am yet to try anything else but plan to in the near future. I gave the PPU's a bash when I 1st bought both guns mainly as it is cheap and it gave me decent groups. Certainly good enough to give me the confidence to go stalking with and I've knocked a few over with the .243 now. I'm yet to use the .308 on live quarry mind you as on the few occasions I've been out with it I've drawn a blank!!

I'm waiting for the .308 150gr PPU to come in to my regular shop and also going to try the geco when I get chance.

Interesting idea about getting someone else to shoot the rifle, I'll have to let my buddy have a bash, although I already know he's a better shot than me so expect the results to improve!!

Cheers

Yesterday I had need to be at Bisley and just thought of this in time thanks to a helpful prompt by Mungo.

All shooting was to be off a bench with front & rear bags as I was testing a new .25 deer bullet so I felt it wasn't in the spirit of things to shoot a group in this manner but neither did I wish to lay in the yellow mud that is a charming feature of Bisley’s Century range! I therefore had a crack at the following (blackish) target at 100 yards from the sitting position using my trusty lightweight
predator Sniper Styx. Unfortunately I cannot tell you which of the 5 shots is first or last as I couldn’t see the holes:

I need to have another bash at this now my .243 has been shortened and re-crowned!

I think we should ask Caorach to instigate a new "dot of doom" thread in 2015…make it an annual event…it will get unwieldy if more is tacked on to this one...he said in the 132nd post!

I also think I will just ask for brown meat at Klenchblaize's this Christmas.

Well, I don't mind doing it but the truth is anyone can do it just by hunting down the link to the target and posting the thread. I had thought of doing it again maybe towards March time when the weather is a little better and the days longer thus making such things easier.

I'm going to be busy/away for a month or so and that rules out any shooting at black dots so I don't like to start a thread and then not shoot at the target myself as that seems like a bit of a cop out.

Nearly 12000 views on this thread and only 74 rounds fired at an actual black dot target!

had a whack at the black dot on paper while weathers cronic, only rimmies till i try the winnies in the 223 so here are two goes, crap weather no sticks ,should have done better, View attachment 50787View attachment 50788the dots the size of s/d logo the small one on the targets ,i had no ink in the printer so couldn,t print any,atb doug,

Thought I'd have another go to and check out some Privi ammo I was given too.
Wind was Right to Left 100m off twin sticks standing.
First (3 shot) group homeloads at the 'a'
Sorry only box I could find
Second (5 shot) group at 'o' with Privi.
'a' and 'o' about an inch

Now moved scope 3 clicks right

Is this a joke?! Or some sort of anti-capitalist, anti-bourgeoisie protest :)

In what way is the Harrods logo a "black dot of doom"?!!

I know it's all for fun but surely you could draw something like the dot with a pen?
