.22 hornet or .22

I would tend to agree about the Hornets range for fox, 200 yards is at its very maximum, I stick at around 150 and use it for fox control around the farm buildings. Of course a 222 or 223 will do the job better but the Hornet is just a nice rifle and I find it quite challenging to get the right load for it. I hesitate to say it, but I find it almost a "fun" rifle.

The .22 Hornet is a lot of fun, especially in a slim, but full size rifle, like the Anschutz or CZ. A friend of mine sighted in an older Anschutz he had purchased, and I asked how it grouped. He said, "I don't know."
"What do you mean, you don't know?"

"It shot them all through the same hole."

Hornet all the way - friend of mine has a lovely Wiehrauch set up with NV - shoots lovely and is very much for the hobbyist reloader.

I dont need one but I'm tempted to get one! Cult status in this neck of the woods...

I have a Lovely Vintage Ruger No3 Falling Block 22 Hornet cracking little rifle ..I have a lot of small paddocks to shoot over the Hornet does the job very nicely indeed..

at the range you are looking at... neither will do the job!
22, no chance. Hornet, with the right rifle and time spent with load possibly (I have a hornet but it's my 130m max rifle)
for the task you want I'd grab my 204, good out to 375m out of the box.

If you get a Hornet, get a CZ American. I have experience loading five different rifles of this model, from a 10 year production span. All are hard-core, sub MOA rifles. Some of the most accurate centerfire .224's I have had the pleasure of shooting. I sold my Anschutz Hornet to buy my CZ and never once looked back. This is a pretty standard group with a decent handload.~Muir

That is a good article. Man, that small-scale Sharps is sweet!

Muir, you are making me look at CZ 527 rifles again. I really like the Lux, and the full stock version, such a nice scaled action and stocks to the .22 Hornet and .223 Remington.

+1 - there's a lovely 527 and a Weihrauch HW60J at my local shop..... Should I really bridge the gap between my WMR and .243....? All this talk is making me want one!

Me to, went to gun shop today to have a look but he said there isn't many that still chamber them and would have to look second hand, he also recommended a .204

Was he selling a .204 by any chance? CZ and Weihrauch still offer new and possibly Ruger. Mind you you can pick up some Pretty good deals second hand, and with 10-13 grains of powder it's never going to be a barrel burner.

Mines a 527 and I reload for mine for the same price I pay for HMR ammo and get a 35gr v-max doing 3050 fps, whats not to like?

am not knocking the accuracy as my Ruger came good in the end two (luv it) at what distance is your group shot out at?

He said both would be special orders but .204 easier to get. I think I gonna go hornet. No one has nothing really bad to say about them!

‎There's no doubt in my mind the 22 Hornet has a certain 'cool' that is all but effortless in projection and strives not to compete - nor ever has - with whatever the firearms 'industry' seeks to burden the rack of your friendly gun shop.

I've mentioned before the smile the Hornet brings to ‎many a seasoned Rifleman's face and who's only experience of small calibre shooting may have been the 22 rimfire. The only explanation for such a countenance I can attribute is that mentioned repeatedly whenever the Hornet gets a mention on SD and is spelt with 3 letters: "FUN"

If a trip up the M5 and a couple of junctions on the M4 isn't too much dauntsey guns have a new CZ and a new HW on the shelf.

Even better news it seems hornady are producing the 35gr V-max again so I'm a happy chap

I have no experience with the Lux, but like I said, the American is 'swear-by' accurate.~Muir

THese are the cheap-o Winchester 46 grain HP, 5 shots.

This is a typical group from the $9/100 Midway Dogtown bullets. These are made by Berger and now sold by MidSouth Shooters as "Varmint Nightmare" bullets.

Those groups sell me. I have heard a lot of good things from other owners of the CZ 527. I like the way it looks and feels like a scaled-down version of my 8x60S Mauser Sporting Rifle Type A, built about 1920. The ladder sight is like the one on my first-year Sako L61R.

When I was about 12 years old, one of my friends had grandparents who lived in town. They had made money before the Depression, and had one business which did well, so they were able to go hunting in the 1920s and on trips like to Africa in the 1930s. She had a Winchester Model 43, a Model 54, a Model 70. I think it was the M43 in .22 Hornet, and the 54 in 7x57. I was talking about how the crows had figured out the range of my .22 Marlin, so she hauled out the .22 Hornet with its Lyman target scope, and told me to see if I could reach them. After a little practice at 200 yards on the empty field at oil cans where they liked to mess with the sprouting corn, I soon had a chance to catch them out there and wounded one. The others came back before he died, and I got a second one. Before I had to return it, I knocked a lookout from the top of a pine tree at 150 yards.

So I think I have an place to fill in my gun rack.
