Just wondering how many on here have never shot a deer?

"Old men plant forests and young men cut them down".

how true!

I have a very wealthy friend who is very big on the clay and game shooting circuit, he used to do an awful lot of stalking. He was shooting on Arran (the posh end, not the BASC end! lol) during the rut and spent a great deal of time watching the big dominant stag fighting off a young contender... after quite some time, the old chap saw off the ambitious youngster and was obviously exhausted and started walking towards my friend and his ghillie... He regales the thoughts going through his head of 'please don't come this way' but the old boy did and the ghillie said 'now' and he did.... now I know no one can make you pull the trigger but in the moment we often resort to following instructions... Anyway, he says it was one of the worst things he has ever done and regrets it to this day, taking the big boy after he had spent so long defending his territory... and at that moment he vowed never to shoot another deer and sold his rifles shortly after.. So... sometimes, it only takes one thing, one moment, one experience to completely change one's mindset!

As an aside, if he had shot the stag a couple of weeks earlier he would have made it into the record book.. the rack is massive, he still has it on display at his farm but he missed the cut off date for that years journal!

I must say I still get more nervous on foxs than deer, last Tues am I had a nice 4 point roe buck, in vevet in the Zeiss, nice easy shot at 80 yds off sticks but didn't have the heart to shoot him, just watched him and then of he went jumping and skipping like a spring lamb. Felt right that I spared him, prehaps he wont be so lucky in July/August, stalking is not about shooting everything, but prehaps thats me as I get older.

D

Get yourself down here then!

I <didn't> shoot 4 the other evening, as I am trying to focus on the roe just now.
In fairness they were were all weenie anyway and I had [IMO] the wrong rifle with me.
Once the roe get harder to find/see/shoot I will specifically target the muntjac, at which point no doubt I won't be able to find any
I don't think I have ever not shot a deer through bambie syndrome but in time I find I let more go than I would have done years ago.

Probably a dream start for me. Started gralloching deer shot by my shooting buddy on his permission. First FAC granted for 22 rim fire and 223 centre fire (for vermin), variation in for 243 and granted permission share with my buddy. Graduated to DSC1 with Jelen Deer (highly recommended). Secured a few more permissions independently, one had to be inspected by FEO as still have a closed ticket.

Still shooting for own consumption.

No hesitation shooting bunnies, foxes, (and geese and pigeons with shot gun).

Use absolute discretion when selecting deer for shot, happy to let dominant buck live on (absolutely not interested in trophy shots and never had a picture taken of me with kill). Prepared to take mother and follower if necessary.

No need for paid stalk or guides.

Will take DSC2 in due course.

Will apply for open ticket on next variation or renewal.

Interesting thread Richard. Nice to hear something from members who might not normally contribute. You might get more input if you adjust the thread to include a poll? ... If it is possible after posting?

cracking post Richard.

I have shot a few not as many as most people but I only shot what I wanted/needed,

I find it strange shooting with someone with me, I don't get nervous I just don't like the feeling it gives me, my first deer was shot on my uncles farm way back in the early 70s not far north of kirkintilloch in Scotland. I felt ok when I took the shot but I was in tears when I walked up to the animal, I have never forgotten it since.

I have had no issues since except when as said above I have a mate with me, I too have been invited by some great lads on the forum to pop up and have a free stalk but I have never done so for the very same reason, and the fact that I don't invite anyone anymore after some trouble with a chap from another site a few years back, and to be invited and not being able to return the invite is not gentlemen like in my books,

as for bunnies crows rooks fox pigeons etc. I have no feelings at all and never look back even at fox cubs, now take me fishing and I just hate it such a graceful thing to see a nice brown trout or a nice salmon swimming up stream or spending you time in the river croe tickling trout was great but I just cant do it anymore.

great post bud

I'm sure there are a significant number of inexperienced folk (of which I'm one!) on here because the forum offers a substitute for something a lot of us don't have (or had!) i.e. a family history of shooting; friends who shoot; basically someone or something that can introduce you to stalking. It's clearly a pursuit that's growing in popularity among folk who would not normally have had any means to learn about it or ultimately get involved.

I joined after my wife gave me a 'stalking experience' as a Christmas present. I wanted to prepare as best I could and like a lot of people nowadays turned to Google which brought me here. Since then I've learned loads from reading the material on here and asking the odd stupid question. I've also met some people who offer excellent stalking at a price I can occasionally afford; joined a local DMG, where I've secured free or discounted training including my DSC1; and been helped and advised on my FAC application.

All of that is invaluable for those of us without the more traditional support network for country sports and while I've managed to shoot a few deer I don't yet consider myself a stalker, although it might be getting a bit closer!

Hi, I have never experience the bambi syndrome. But it's true that I have a diffent feeling while I've been looking at the animal for a long time before pressing the trigger.
Probably nothing to do with this topic but I don, t feel comfy while I was with someone else, even worse a pal than a professional. However,90% of my stalking has been on my own. The most awful misses had been while been observed.

shot a Red at the start of last year ,did two gralloch days and a butchery day and finished the year with a Fallow with sikamalc.so 11 outings for for 2 deer and 3 training days. dont mind though as all those stalks had very experienced people teaching me so much i didnt know.frustrating watching out of season does walk by .but enjoyment being out there as i work shifts in a tin shed is amazing.the joy last night for me n her seeing our first local muntys priceless.no ground yet ,DSC1 done but will keep knocking till someone cracks just to shut me up:rofl:

Hi, What a great thread. Sitting in chair knee throbbing been up since 01.45 this morning (bring on op please) Just watched football over the top of laptop.
This brought back some good memories. I was giving permition to shoot a few red hinds for helping keeper throw-out the year. This was around 25 year ago. Then he said do you fancy going for a stag I'll take you when they come in. Time finally came up we went landy towing argo cat, arrived at moor cat off and up we went. Then on foot up some more, seen some hinds then I heard a roar what the **** was that I said. That is what were after that's a stag roaring first time I ever heard it for real. I could feel every hair on my body stand out with excitement. About an hour later we could get into him, But all I could see was the top of his antlers as he was going up and down roaring keeping his hinds in. Keeper just kept saying you'll never hear a better sound, be patient he will come up what seemed to be for ever actually around twenty min then he came up what a beast he was massive. Calm down I was told he doesn't know we are hear. Opportunity came bipod down 7mm ready looked throw scope take your time breath that's it when your ready squeeze. Shot went off I could not see him I was assured everything was ok he was down. Walked over around 130 yards their he was a magnificent beast to me 12 pointer shot clean throw heart/lungs. This was my first stag remember it as if it was yesterday.
