458 win mag for boar?

I don't think he does feel the need. I think it's more that he got the .458 for a buffalo hunt and that was his initial
good reason. It's now renewal time and he wants to keep the .458 without booking another buffalo hunt. So he wants to see if it is feasible for boar.
Which it most certainly is.

Cartridges of the World as gospel

Oh dear! It is NOT gospel it is a false testament that repeats oft repeated American errors. The classic one being the nonsense they write in COTW about the bullet size in 7.62mm Nagant revolver as having a .295 bullet. Or some such tommy rot! Gets repeated edition after edition too!

And the total guff in editions before the 9th about the .32 Winchester Special cartridge being designed as a "smokeless cartrdige that designed so that it could be reloaded with blackpowder once fired" or similar rubbish....

Thank your lucky stars that they went to the expense of a copy of COTW. Our local force couldn't even run to that a few years back and relied upon a Norma ammunition pamphlet that a FEO picked up in a local gun shop. As far as they were concerned if it wasn't listed by Norma it didn't exist, I kid you not.

Oh "merde"...as those Bayeux based medieval bad boys used to say.

That'd be a "non", and pretty much "one in the eye" no doubt, for anyone wanting anything designed after 1066 then?

Did they however give out a certificate variation, upon request, for a "mace" for humane dispatch? So not ALL bad then!

there are exceptions to all rules
several people I know with 338LM, 375H&H. 300RUM, 9.3x74/64 etc and similar conditioned for UK deer

see no reason why with a judicious approach to your variation why a 458 couldnt be conditioned too

its the same energy figures chucking a 300gr as a 375H&H chucking a 300gr

Ive seen a fallow shot with a 338 LM at about 150 yards. It was quite strange to watch. Neither me or the chap pulling the trigger thought the deer had been hit. It walked on 5 yards and hopped the fence as if nothing had happened. We found it about 40 yards down the slope. The exit wound was bigger than fist size and the shot placement was spot on. So you can use a 338 LM but whether you will get much meat back is questionable.

I have a .338 win mag but it"s never yet been fired except for the German proof testing. The price new was so cheap from Franconia Germany at 449 Euros for a winchester model 70 high grade that I just had to have it.
Would be fun on boar also.

I have a 9.3x62mm and a 9.3x74r both for any legal quarry. I do tend to shoot less than 300 grns.

I do also have a .375 H&H and a .416 Rigby but they are both for use abroad only, though I am allowed 20 round of each for practice and zeroing. I did consider having a go for expanding for the .375 next renewal as it is easy to buy quality ammo in UK than SA, I had a bad experience with a duff batch of PMP a few years ago......

As said earlier, I think you should be allowed 458 WM for UK Boar. I've got a 9.3x62 for boar and ALOQ. I argued it was better than the 7x64 I have for deer and ALOQ.

2015 HO Guidance (https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/417199/Guidance_on_Firearms_Licensing_Law_v13.pdf)

Paragraph 13.37:

"The police will wish to be satisfied that an applicant has genuine intentions to use such

rifles abroad, though such visits may be infrequent. Zeroing and practicing with non-
expanding ammunition may be permitted in the UK, providing a suitable range or land is
available. Those who home-load their non-expanding ammunition for such zeroing will
also need to test and chronograph it. Some rifles intended for antelope and other plains
game may also be suitable for deer, boar or other quarry shooting in this country. Once
initial “good reason” has been established for a rifle in shooting “dangerous game”, it may
also be considered for shooting the larger deer species and boar in Britain. Expanding
ammunition may (must in the case of deer) also be authorised for an applicant whose
certificate allows for the rifle also to be used for shooting deer or boar in Britain. Where a
shooter experiences difficulties in obtaining “dangerous game” cartridges in the country
where that game is to be hunted, arrangements can be made for a dealer to export an
appropriate quantity which can be collected by the shooter at the point of embarkation.
Individuals may be authorised expanding or non-expanding ammunition in line with typical
amounts authorised for use in firearms for target and quarry shooting. "
