Fridge problems

I picked up a commercial style glass door fridge the other day, but not sure if it's working properly. I have it set to 2 degrees, which it will achieve, but then the compressor will turn off and the temp QUICKLY rise to 5+, which it will sit at for a seemingly random amount of time before the compressor once again kicks in and brings it down to the set temp.

Does anyone know if this is normal for a fridge of this type? I've verified the thermometer is working properly.

Where is the fridge stored, its important to keep these fridges/chillers in a area which the ambient temp does not drop below the temp you set, most fridges are not designed to be left in garages, out houses etc

Sounds to me like the thermostat is cream crackered. I bought a Coca Cola fridge last year off eBay and it was doing the same thing, freezing minus temps one minute then plus temps the next.
I did a lot of digging about and found a supplier in Northern Ireland who supply spare parts for Norcool fridges, thing the new thermostat was about £20 and it’s been spot on ever since (mines in an outbuilding too).

Does the time it kicks in, happen when it turns 6 deg on temp? Or do you mean it gets warmer than 5?

Does the internal temp rise to the same temp each time before the compressor kicks back in? You say plus 5 degs C, but is it 5 or a random temp?

Is is more likely the stat as others have said, but if its rising equally then it could be the dead band setting.

2 Degs C is bit low for a domestic application fridge by the way as well, which means it will be expensive to run. Think of a car being rev'd to the red line all day long and you will get the idea.

Cheers, sounds like this may be the problem then. Was it a difficult job to replace?

The thermostat will have a dead band set into it if it go's down to 2c i suspect it is set at 3c the dead band can be set at 1 deg either way to 4 deg either way it stops the compressor short cycling and destroying its self.
You could look on the internet and down load a service manual and adjust it or buy a new one.
If you want to sort your problem PM me with your phone number and I will give you a ring.

Ben, Would you mind PM-ing me the firm’s details?

+3 is a perfectly normal range for the compressor to cut in at.my chiller is set at 0.this allows for the temperature increase when game is added.im no fridge expert but I work alongside them . :thumb:
