PROPER A A A List visitor

I flyfished a large gravel pit along the Nar Valley a few years ago and got lucky one day while wading along a big bed of Norfolk reeds. One took off behind me and landed in another bed a couple of hundred yards away. I'd say that Bittern was a weaker flyer than a Grey Heron.
That's the only time I've seen one, and it was close :)

Seen it a couple of times flying - and yes agree looks a very odd sight !

Have not seen or even heard a bittern for many years. First one that I ever came across was as a kid sitting in a punt on the waters edge in North Norfolk waiting to shoot a mink. Ruddy thing 'boomed' in the reedbed just behind us and I damned near sh8t myself !
The old keeper I was with took twenty minutes to stop giggling :)

heard a bittern yesterday, walking near minsmere. Weird sound.
Got screamed at by i assume barn owl on tuesday night.
Birds are very different
