Now we know who let the goats inIn Tim’s orchard! Creepy
At least the weather is perfect this week for starting the grass cuttingAnd it’s working!
The answer was……..
Spark plug!
Changed it for a new one and now it started and runs sweetly
Thanks for all your advice and suggestions!
boshi was just thinking why has no one mentioned the sparkplug
i have an old honda izzy and i will pretty much guarantee you it will be the sparkplug
Only a small old domestic lawn mower, no fancy electrics. Lawn mower model is HR173. Turned out it was the spark plug.I might be saying something stupid...... but. I have no knowledge of that particular honda 4 stroke (take it is a GV100?) But the bigger honda 4 strokes have caught me out with the oil sump/reservoir, they have a little electrical sensor in them, and if the oil is very dirty or too low the engine will not start.
Just a thought
Not got inclination or time to read whole thread but if it’s not been suggested…. No matter what machine it is …start every season with a fresh plug and before “ laying up “ drain all the juice.

Geese do a sterling job also.Sheep, cows or deer are the answer for grass. Or rabbits.
Yes, mine was sooted up after a summers use. Needed a good clean and was back up and running. Also dont use the cheapo petrol it will ruin the engineDon't think anyone's mentioned the spark plug. Clean it, or maybe get a new one and check the gap is correct.
Valve clearances mate. They’ve tightened up. Gets hot, valves expand & lose compression. Cool down, contract restarts. Put money on itWell it’s that time of year again
Lawn mower out of the shed and the damn thing will not start
An old Honda HR173, from what I’ve read they are pretty much bullet proof. Pull start petrol.
Third or forth pull and it fires, runs for five or six seconds then stops. Will not fire up again until it has had a long rest.
Straight to YouTube, I find a tutorial for this very model. Go out and buy a spray can of carburettor cleaner. Strip down and flush out carb and its components as instructed on the video
Empty old petrol from the tank and half fill again with fresh.
Reassemble.
Bloody thing does exactly the same, except fires up second or third pull this time but then again fades away after a few seconds.
Anybody able to offer any advice before it goes to the tip?
