Day of the jackal

Not enough shooters go to the woods sporting a cravat to compliment their man bra binocular harness, IMHO!

In the original (Edward Fox) film, the round used looked very similar to a 22 Hornet.

Yes this is the best TV, my family won't watch it but I think it's brilliant. It might not be that factually accurate but the stories and characters are excellent.
Factually accurate TV is a rare thing. Scenes of pheasant shooters standing shoulder to shoulder like they're at Waterloo, police high ranking officers investigating crimes and interviewing suspects with other CID officers as gofers and uniformed officers merely for show, usually standing in a corner of an interview room or delivering 'phone messages, cowboys able to shoot someone hundreds of yards away with an early Colt percussion revolver that never runs out of ammo. I could go on. But I guess really, you've got to try and overlook such things if you want to watch what otherwise might be a good bit of escapism.

In the book it is the area outside Montparnasse railway station. Which by the time the film was being produced had been demolished.

The late 90s version with Bruce Willis isn’t too bad, but it does have Richard Gere who is awful. The original 70s one is much more believable. Not see this series which you speak of.

Another good Fredrick Forsyth adaptation is the film the dogs of war with Christopher walken.

Arctic Circle on Channel 4 OD. Part of Walter Presents. Finnish / Russian with some really good hunting rifles in use during season 2.

But its all really pretty warped and fecked up in a must see next episode sort of way.

I really like dramas in other languages as you have to concentrate on the sub titles and thus are a great escape, unlike other stuff where you can sit on SD writing bollox all the time.

Someone has made a copy of the original film rifle. Here is one of the YouTube videos:

There are others of you care to search.

And now illegal, or rather s5, in the UK since 1992 as a firearm disguised as another object.

Enacted into law under the government of those friends of shooting the Tory Party.

I posted it to show it could be done and so is somewhat more believable that the current tv offering. I neither need not want such a rifle; it is for academic interest only.

On your point that it is illegal (and I am not a lawyer) I think there is some room for doubt that it is a S5 rifle. The rifle is not disguised as another object. The rifle is merely designed to fit into a tube. If the definition you suggest is true then every time I put my rifles into cases/slips it would become S5.

It may fall foul of other legislation regarding size.

As a shooter the “ sniper “ bits will irritate you, watched all of them it was ok not great, final episode as usual left the door open to series 2

Yes thank you for your response. I have wondered if putting my shotgun in its leather takedown case counts as disguising it as a piece of luggage. I would imagine the test might be can the thing be fired when in its walking aid/crutch format or only fired when it is assembled.

However a different test might be what was the purpose of the crutch format was it to enable the firearm to avoid it being noticed as such? Whereas a gunslip or leather takedown guncase isn't. OTOH I have handled once upon a time the famous H & K briefcase.

I think it is this "concealability" fetish that beset Michael Howard when the pistol ban was enacted and the creation of the size restrictions you mention. I think if we did have one we'd all want better than a 4x20 BSA air rifle 'scope on it!

:)

Some good points raised here. On the test of whether it was designed to conceal the fact you are transporting a firearm I would, respectfully, point out that that gun cases made to resemble guitar cases are easily available.
