Do I need to buy a crossbow?

To be fair, it’s mildly surprising they’re not already licensed.

Easy to shoot at short range (unlike bows), more than powerful enough to kill.

I’ve often thought they’d be superb for roe deer control in built up areas.

You absolutely do!!

They are an amazing tool. I get to spend a number of months a year hunting deer on my Michigan woodland property with one. They are super effective and accurate for short range use. I personally limit my shots to about 50 yards. I always thought they would be good for UK woodland deer use but sadly they have never been seen very positively by anyone in the UK. You have that Rambo look .......lol

Lots of amazing technology:

Unfortunately it looks like another thin end of the wedge as more and more controls and restrictions are introduced, I'm wondering what will be left in the future.

How far do deer usually run after hit by the bolt? Assuming shot placement is good?

I've never understood the British way regards many things but especially the banning of hunting with archery tackle.
The law is out of date. Archery tackle has come on a long way and is extremely efficient. It is also when compared to a firearm much safer. It also is very sustainable with non toxic arrows that can be used many many times.

I also don't understand this move to ban them all together. There is nothing stopping people from making their own to commit a crime.

Yet again liberty is being taken away rather than execute a murderer!

Give it 20 years and we'll all be using them, along with horse and carts

Typically 20 - 60 yards, I personally favor a double lung shot. We typically hunt from a tree seat or platform up about 20' over small woodland food plots, there are plenty of deer and often come in small groups. It's a good way to thin out whitetail does. A good broadhead and bolt is typically 400 - 500 grains, you have a scope on your crossbow with dots set for 25, 35, 45 yards etc.

I often find that the crossbow hits deer harder than a .308 does!!! We loose more deer to gun use compared to bow use.

A couple of photos from my tree stand as I'm hunting.

These might be the muzzle loading equivalent for you 🙂

That’s really interesting.

Do you have a sense of why you lose more to rifles?

My first thought is that people might be overconfident with a gun and take chancier shots?
