Midday stalking

Shot loads of deer midday, people always told me go first light and last light but ive stalked first light right through till last light loads of times.. saw plenty and shot plenty midday, depends on time of year, sometimes ive found roe with thermal bedded up, waitied for them to stand and ive seen groups of roe moving midday..seen plenty of muntjac too

Amount of shooting pressure seems to make a difference.

Heavily shot ground - not often out in the middle of the day.

Lightly shot - time of day doesn’t make much difference.

Biggest sika stag I’ve seen shot (by a client) was out at lunchtime. We’d been out all morning, and had given up. Walking back to the truck chatting. I looked up a hillside, and there he was, calmly grazing in a grassy opening in the forestry above us.

What are people's experiences of going out to walk their rifle around midday to pass the hours between the morning and evening stalk?
When we first started going to an estate in Lincolnshire I asked if we could go out at lunch times as it just seemed stupid to drive all that way go out for 3 hrs in the high seat then waste the next few hours back at the digs then go back for the afternoon
The keeper said fine by me, we shot deer and a few foxes during the mid-day session which in some cases those that blanked in the morning or afternoon managed to get deer at lunch time (and let's be honest that is why people go)
So to answer your question yes shooting deer midday can work.

Plenty of times I'll be out all day. My work has days where I can slip off and stalk, and just keep a rough eye on what comes in.

Some days I'll go out for the morning and nothing will come in. I'll just stay out all day. Beats going home and just watching mind numbing TV.

My first ever solo deer was a fallow shot at 1230.

It is perfectly doable in Winter - in particular on bright sunny winter days after a period of bad weather. I like to go out after breakfast, the TV News, morning paper and a few coffees ;) say by 11AM. and Stalk until around 3PM. Providing you stalk undisturbed ground there will be deer to be found and culled.

For fallow- in areas where they’re not disturbed very often I’ve had success in the middle of the day- most spots it’s not productive bar early morning/last light. I’m finding fallow almost nocturnal now where there is shooting pressure.
