m77 trigger weights

I've never dealt with triggers at all, so bear with me.

We have a M77 that I enjoy using and I would like too utilize It on roe deer for more marginal as shoot it well, however like most M77's It has an absolutely horrific trigger weight on it I would be surprised If Its under 5lbs obviously for the intended use I would really appreciate if this was lowered and just overall It would be nicer rifle with a more standard hunting trigger weight.

I'm just curious If any after market parts are required, or could a gunsmith be able too look and have it done within the day? I'm having very conflicting results on google about potentially needing another spring or straight up replacing the entire mechanism on some models.

It has the end of a screw that sticks out on the underside infront of the trigger, I'm assuming that's apart of the mechanism and weight?

I’ve just fitted a Rifle Basix to my 77/22 ordered directly from the manufacturer’s website. It’s made an almost unbelievable difference and takes about 15 to 20 minutes to fit. The only downside is Customs charges. All in it’s about £150 but I think worth it.

Mk1 or mk2?

I used to have a mk2 Hawkeye and I recall the only way to alter the trigger would be a lighter spring.
I believe It is Mk1? Its one of the mannlicher compact models, tang/slide style safety.

As commented above a reasonable gunsmith can quickly improve the trigger, I own a lot of Ruger M77 MK I and MK II models and have had the triggers worked on a little to give a lighter smoother trigger pull. My Ruger M77 rifles have been real work horses since the mid 1980's. I refuse to sell any of them, they are like old friends.

I see was there much that can be done from the factory trigger or Is it overall just more worth while going with an after market trigger?

Replace the trigger return spring with one from a biro pen 👌

Shot a Ruger m77 mk2 In 270win for many many many years and that revolutionised the trigger!!

I never had one fitted with an after market trigger, my gunsmith polished up the factory trigger, on several range use rifles he achieved very light pulls (less than 2lb), for my hunting rifles he would have them at about 2.5lbs but smooth them also. It is like shooting a different rifle once the trigger is worked on! My gunsmith was not expensive in those days, a Timney trigger was quite a cost. I have no clue what a gunsmith would ask today to polish up a Ruger trigger.

Good luck improving your trigger, you will love the outcome.

The Ruger m77 is a bombproof workhorse of a rifle, it will last you a lifetime!

You’ll never kill it that’s for sure, I thrashed mine hard and still shot sub inch when I sold it.
They seem overall very nice affordable rifles I've enjoyed shooting them, Its a shame the standard size ones are very large for a women but the compact model is perfect.

I love the rifle despite being very light I find it dead steady in many circumstances for roe where they pop out anywhere and everywhere not being reliant on a sticks, or a solid rest of some sort Is exceptionally nice long as I can brace myself against something, Its feasible.

Obviously however.... a near 6lb trigger weight does not help right now but Its bloody nice too shoot, makes a quite nice bang and muzzle flash at dusk too!

Never worked on one Sol but have heard a spring swap is all that is needed to reduce weight. Like Tikka and Parker Hales. Some triggers are just so easy to adjust but still safe.
If you don't want to use a scavenged spring from a pen, which isn't an issue if it's close in size, remove yours, measure it's length, diameter and it's wire thickness. Look for similar dimensions on the web but with thinner wire and it will be lighter.

Out of curiosity I pulled my Ruger M77 220 Swift (tang safety) from the safe and the trigger breakes at a very consistent 2lb 7oz. It is all original but I did lighten the pull weight many years ago by adjusting the screw on the trigger.
