Caught Today

Fox in a fox trap last night which had been set for weeks. I shot a big dog lasts week so erroneously thought I solved the hen killer problem obviously not. Small dog. Strange it didn't show up on the trail camera.
Have lost count of the number of magpies we have caught but 4 traps in action on 3 farms. The circular multi catch are just deadly.
D

I am also seeing large reductions in numbers caught - the last few years hard work os paying off
I honestly have never seen so many farmland / woodland birds - game birds nesting either
They should be sitting, with the hen on the eggs/ hatchlings the cock can find enough to keep them fed close to home.
When the young are feathered he’ll have to work a lot harder and range a lot further to keep up.
The rooks are at that phase now, they’re taking crazy risks to keep the family fed.

Again because of the efforts over the years Dunwater the place is buzzing with insect life already and i feed all year on hard tracks / rides - and this year have filled pheasants feeders with wheat / rape/ sunflower/ millet so everything is able to get a proper feed

I get that, all I’m saying is that at the moment the cock bird is having an easy time, in a couple of weeks he’ll be under real pressure and have to range a bit further. Most birds have similar behaviour until the young are fledged enough to keep themselves warm.

Do you mean corvids ?

Not strictly corvids, most birds with helpless nest bound chicks ( I can’t remember the learned word for it) do something similar.
For example my starlings are sitting, the cock bird spends most of his time singing and scratching his ass. In a fortnight he’ll be going like a one armed paper hanger to keep the Mrs and kids fed all on his own. Once the young have a few feathers, they’ll both be busy.

My old dog and his sister took no prisoners. Orange dog stepped in steel. They weren't savaging, more displaying that they owned the place.
