Level actions - typical usage

Hand loading the older cartridges certainly seems to get the best out of them. With hornady white tail round nose factory I was getting around 3” groups, with home loaded yew tree I’m under an inch.

Are you single loading or have you managed to get them short enough to cycle for one in the mag?
They will cycle, but it limits your powder charge ability due to how deep they are seated. I had to stop a whole grain short of max to get the bullet to seat deep enough for it to cycle. The charge is still heavily compressed! Issue i found was if you dont have them deep enough to cycle from the mag you cant extract a live round either so a deep seat and sacrifice powder was the way forward. But im happy with speed and charge etc so its just more paper punching to do before its used on something living.

1787 ft-lb will kill deer, it’s around what my 25-45 runs at, so if the accuracy is there then sounds like you’re into a winner. At least until they ban lead.

Exactly, once lead is gone its gone. Then I cant beat it so I will join it, will be the 7mm PRC for me and copper and smash everything to bits. Turn roe into red mist and 2 back legs.

Nah, you won’t need to do that. I was a massive copper sceptic, it’s pretty much all I use now. Other than the swede which is still using up lead.

I run Yew Tree 124 HPs in the .280, generally does Les’s damage than the 140 gr NBTs we’re doing. The 80 gr barnes out of the little 25-45 also get the job done very well. No need to smash things up, just cut the heart and/or lungs up and they never go very far.

That said the lead I’m using up in the swede, 120 pro hunters really do smash things up. The butcher has been asking what I’ve been shooting them with!

I use copper now for the .270 when im not shooting for my own freezer. But it doesn't preform well at the ranges I require sometimes on big reds. So I find it very restrictive. I have no choice but to go bigger, push heavier copper chunks that keep up the speed and energy at the required distances. 7mm PRC fits my requirements for that. I will keep the copper in the .270 when I have no choice but treat it like a .243, and then the 30-30 will have to go to copper and will be back down to a 100 to 150 yard gun again. But not much else we can do unfortunately. I will have to adapt and thats fine, I will when I need to and do already when I have to.

What bullet are you using?

Plenty on here shooting copper at >300 yards in non magnum cartridges to good effect.

I’ve shot roe with 7mm PRC using 160gr copper. The damage wasn’t excessive at all. Not shot a MJ with it yet though…

I like my teeth where they are though (and spine for that matter)
It’s really not that bad with a brake or mod attached, Hornady copper ammo is 250 gr so on the lighter side for the calibre. If you reload then 30-30 and .44 magnum are more viable with copper.
