The early success high seat conundrum

So you are on a Munty mission for a friend, local farmer, lovely organic beaf herd, wants them kept in check (TB etc)

Nice high seat in but on the edge if the wood.

Sat for 18:00 , Munty doe shot at 19:00, plenty of time left and vehicle not far away.

What next ?

Leave seat, gralloch, return to vehicle , job done.

As above then return to seat hope for another.

As above but have a wander through the wood, hoping for another.

Stay in seat leave deer on ground, its not hot and you shot it high shoulder, hope another comes along.

Or has the shot sent them all packing.

Over to SD

First thoughts: I'm staying put for another one, a buck, within 20-30 minutes. Depends on the air temperature, of course, but the deer will be draining out through a big hole.
Second thoughts, I'm going to bleed and suspend it, and go for a stalk, because it's more interesting than sitting still.
Third thoughts: either of those would be lovely, but I promised to be home by 19:30, so it's grab, gralloch and go!

Edit: the shot hasn't sent them packing even if you weren't using a moderator.

Muntjac out in wheat field,5 in number. Got 4 of them, last doe in the hedge they came through so no shot due to too much undergrowth between me and her to deflect the bullet.
Moderated 223,sound didn't alarm them. Whack from the impact just turned the survivors towards the sound, looking towards the recipient, alerted but not alarmed.
2 headshot and 2 very high neck.
If I'd have broken cover from firing position I reckon they'd have scarpered.
Quite often got braces and triples, seems to work not moving after shot. Mind you I'm the only person stalking the estate so deer not pressured at all.

TB my arse in all my years of stalking I am yet to hear of see a muntjac with TB

Nice buck but it will eat like 💩 big old bucks always do, tough as old boot
Sadly, the photos from the day are no more but this muntjac from Wiltshire (shot on 9 Jan 24) was confirmed by APHA to be Bovine TB positive. The mature animal appeared healthy in all respects externally (apart from having a low tick burden).

The area is heavily grazed with cattle and there are numerous positive reports from cattle all across the area on DEFRA’s ibTB mapping.

There is a first for everything Lee :tiphat:

Another colleague has found this showing the initial opening up:

For me "get down have a wander through the wood, hoping for another" - mostly because I find sitting in a high seat pretty boring.
Sitting in a high seat on a fine early morning is to me one of the least boring things to do.
I have watched nature's glory hudreds of times. From a family of stoats acting like a brown snake to long tailed tits chittering in the vegetation round my head as they constantly move on in search of insects. All these things connect me with the atmosphere that takes me into that purpose for which.I am there. There are plain shooters and there are those interested in the whole of the natural world. I know which I am, do you?
